Hi!

So I've moved into a new place, got settled, and decided I want some beautiful goldfish.

I've been doing some research for the last couple of days and I'm going between a 37 Gal Tall tank and a 29 Gal tank.

I'd like 4 fish - currently thinking Ryukin, Black Moor, Panda, and possibly another Ryukin or Telescope.
(Not sure yet.)

This question really spans multiple sub-forums...

1) Is this an acceptable mix of fish? From what I understand I think they should be fine together.

2) I won't be able to get all four at once, how long should I wait to introduce a new fish?

So back to the tank...

My main concern is cost of the equipment but also sustainable space for the fish to grow to full size.

The store I looked at tanks in had stands for $150-200 for the 37 gal, which is a little too much on top of tank price (29 gal was $65 plus stand of about $150 whereas 37 gal was $117 + stand price)

Online I saw these and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on their durability:

the other is on amazon and is the Aquatic Fundamentals 29/37 Gallon Upright Aquarium Stand

Much more price effective but I want to make sure they'll last!

My next question is about the other tank elements:
1) What filters/air pumps/heaters/thermometors are recommended? Any specific brands?
2) I'm thinking of getting some fresh water plants for the fish, are there any good recommended ones? This is an area I'm completely unsure about and could use some advice.

You said the 37 gallon was tall? That's not a good choice for goldfish, they need a lot of oxygen, so a goldfish tank should be wide/long rather than tall, if you can find one!

1. No. Moors should be kept only with moors, otherwise they may not get the food they need.
2. Get one-two small goldfish for starters and then wait until the tank is cycled, or even better, let the tank cycle completely without any fish, then you can safely add them a bit faster later. Are you familiar with the cycling process and methods?

Tank questions:
1. Choose a filter or two, to make sure it/they pump at least 10 times the water volume per hour. i.e. you want a 37 gal, buy filtration that pumps between 37 and 40gph or even more, a 29 gal would need 29-30+gph if you want goldfish.
I run an external Eheim filter and an internal Fluval filter, together they pump about 3000 liters/hour (My tank is 317L).
2. Plants that I've kept successfully with goldfish include: Java Fern, Java moss and various Anubias. The Anubias have pretty thick and waxy leaves (They also bloom sometimes!!) and come in many different sizes, there are dwarf anubias that will cover the bottom in a nice little carpet, then there are also Barter's Anubias that grow to some kind of medium size, and then also Giant anubias. I'd go with the first two mentioned since you're not intending to get a monster tank

You need a separate tank, see, parasites or bacteria spread through water, so does medication, so if you want to treat only one fish by using a divider, you end up killing all the good bacteria in the tank and you'll have to cycle it again + you'll end up treating all the other fish for no reason! A 10 gallon is perfect as a quarantine tank

Mixes, well, I keep fantails, orandas, pom poms and a pearl scale together, they're all pretty similar in their needs and how fast they are The problem with moors (I had two, one of them just couldn't grow and suddenly he just died on me :'/) is that they see pretty bad, they can't find the food before someone else does. If you'd be feeding the fish heavily, you'll end up overfeeding the other fish, while the moor will be undernourished. I was planning on buying a small tank (20-30 gallon) to keep a few moors in separately
Anyway, you can pick pretty much any egg shaped goldies and keep them together! As mentioned, orandas, pearl scales, fantails, ryukins, pom poms, veil tails... just find one or a few kinds you like!
Of course, there wouldn't be anything wrong with keeping only moors either if you really like them!

You should rather not use pure ammonia for cycling a tank, it's not a very safe method. Rather add the fish food, or a piece of shrimp or fish to the tank and remove it once it's cycled, remember to test the water!! Then you can do a little water change (50%) and add a few fish

The cycling is complete when the ammonia and nitrites have been replaced by nitrates, and after that, weekly water changes will be needed to keep the nitrates down. It usually takes 2 weeks for the nitrates to reach harmful levels (30-40ppm) but it's still a good idea to have a regular schedule when it comes to maintaining your tank

Not from eachother, no, they would have been in the same water so they could hardly contaminate themselves! But it wouldn't be safe for them to be put straight into an uncycled tank, so please wait with getting them. The fish at pet stores are usually pretty stressed out and can easily get sick.

But if you'll buy a new fish after these three have established themselves, you'll need to quarantine him/her in case it carries parasites or infection
