Help! My goldfish is laying on the bottom of the tank & not eating...
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:03:03 AM »

Help! My goldfish (I think a Comet, very long pretty tail, mostly white in colour with a red/orange head & patch on body) has been laying on bottom of tank for about 4 days or so now, & hasn't eaten anything (from what i've seen) in that time! Last night & today we have noticed he (i assume he) is laying kind of tilted on his side on bottom of tank, still breathing, but not moving at all.
Yesterday we put in 8ml of Aqua Master Multi Cure (for white spot, velvet disease, other fungal diseases) which turns water green for few days, & he seemed to pick up! Started swimming around & actually went to top of tank alot, but seemed to sink almost instantly when stopped swimming. Seemed to struggle to stay up top of tank, but still swam ok, tried to eat food but couldnt quite do it, then sunk again & has been at bottom of tank now all night & day :-(
Have had fish for about a year - Have an AquaOne 340 Pro tank (40L) - I use Prime water conditioner & Aqua One conditioning salts when cleaning tank - Feed them twice a day with Wardley Total Goldfish flakes - clean tank usually once every 3 weeks roughly - Have 2 other fish in tank, have had them for 5 or 6mths & they are fine.

Dont know what to do, please help!!
Thankyou

I think this might be because the parameters are off. You should get a 120 liter tank and whats happening won't happen.

You have far too small tank actually, and you're not changing the water often enough.
You'll need to change the schedule Smiley

I recommend this for you:
- Do a large water change, using a siphon to get the dirt out of the gravel (or as they're also called "gravel vacuum")
Take out a little more than half the water.
- Never, ever clean out the whole system!! This will kill all the beneficial bacteria and expose your fish to ammonia, which is highly toxic, and may even be lethal to your fish!
- Don't add salt, just water conditioner.
- Feed them some frozen peas. Just remember to thaw them and pop them out of their shells before feeding Smiley
Give them only these for a couple of days. If you can, feed them some live foods, blood worms or shrimp, you can get them at the pet shop!
- Start looking for a bigger tank, since you have a comet, it'll need roughly 80 liters to be happy. Adding the other fish, I'd get at least a 120L, like fantailer suggested. But if you can afford a bigger tank, say 200L, that would be even better! What kind of fish are the others in the tank?

Thankyou for the replies Smiley the last 2 times or so (excluding the most recent in which I only changed about half or 2/3 of the tank water) I usually remove all of the water due to the tank & ornaments (not live) being so green after just a week or 2, so maybe that could be the reason? But the other 2 are fine- one is a little black one with bulbous eyes & the other is a normal Jaffa colored one about the same size as the black one. I put the green liquid in tank the day after the last water change where I changed bit more than half the water & due to change it again today & I tried the peas but the fish is not interested at all in any food, he just won't eat! Keeps laying on the bottom breathing, & he looks completely healthy, no slime, white spots, blood vessels or anything! Sad & I've had him for about a year & the other 2 for about 5mths I think & they've all always been fine? The sick one used to live in the tank with 2 other normal goldfish which died in Feb this yr, found them both in a fake plant on the bottom of tank dead on their sides all of a sudden, but this one  was fine, & has been perfectly fine & lively up until now. Very worried, nothing is working & he hasn't eaten in 5 days or so Sad

From the looks of it, I'd say it's as simple as a water parameter issue. Could you go have your water tested please? I'm pretty sure your tank simply isn't cycled yet!
Some beneficial bacteria should help, change water every second/third day and add it according to instructions on the bottle, here's a list of a few kinds you can look for at the pet shop: Nitrivec by Sera, "fluid bio-filter medium" by Easylife, Stablity by Seachem, Stress Zyme and Stress Coat by API.

Are the other two fish egg-shaped? Do they both have round bodies and bulbous eyes? In that case, they aren't suitable with a comet, since they have very poor eye sight and won't be able to get food later on.

Have you started looking for a tank yet?

Thanks again Nossie, however my fish had died by the time I got home today, R.I.P. Fanta :-( Yes the other 2 are more round/egg shaped, not streamline at all, the black one has bulbous eyes, the other one doesn't, he has a different tail kind of fanned out & open. I'm thinking now I won't need a bigger tank.. So what type of cleaning schedule would you recommend? How often, & how much of the water? & I don't use the salts every time, just the water conditioner?

I'm really sorry Sad

Okay, so now you have two fancy goldfish left, but you will still need a bit bigger tank. Fancies however, don't need as much water and swimming space as comets, so a 100 liter would do. But now that there are just two fish, you can actually keep them happy there for a few months at least! Smiley

So from now on, always change the water once a week, take out about half of it. Make sure you try and keep the temperature of the fresh water as close to the tank water as possible. And if you don't have a siphon/ gravel vacuum, you should buy one, they're really cheap and make changing the water that much easier! Cheesy It's basically just a hose with a kind of cone-shape on the end. A water test kit will be necessary to keep the fish healthy, in such a small and crowded tank you will need to test that weekly, before every water change, look for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Don't use salt at all unless you're treating for disease! If it's some sort of mineral salt designed to change the pH value and hardness in the tank, you don't ever need to use it for goldfish. Just the water conditioner and beneficial bacteria when you change water Smiley

Good avdice.  And if your tank is still cycling, use something to neutralize the ammonia and nitrites, such as Prime.
