i had a bunch of goldfish for years, some of them went white after being orange, my eight year old fish would randomly have spots of black on her, on one her forehead that gave her the name india. it would freak me out too when it first started happening, but it seemed to be a normal course of things. on the edges of the fins would have me a little nervous and i would definitely check the water. goldfish tend to produce alot of ammonia and that would tend to make a difference in how the fish are.

sounds like you both have a pretty nasty case of fin rot on your hands. there are lots of cures for it, but if you let it go too long, then you will undoubtedly lose a good beautiful fish. i see this happen with so many of the fish i treat and the ones i get called to heal. Melafix (as you all must get sick of me saying) has served me well in these situations, but you must also make sure that fin problems are NOT being caused by semi aggressive tank mates.
seems to me you have a bad case of fin rot. treat it fast, because i hate it when people let this go and i ruins their pretty fish.
