They keep dying.

My goldfish continue to suddenly die on me. All of them with no symptoms showing until I find them dead. I recently changed the water (last Friday) and have tested it and found that it's absolutely perfect. Nothing whatsoever is wrong with the water or the filters, even the plants are starting to look happier again. But I keep losing my fish. I have only Honey and Raven left, she started bottom sitting now. I'm feeding them with medicated pellets since last Friday as well, to make sure that they'll be alright, but it doesn't seem to be helping either. These are two goldfish in a 317 liter tank (83 gallons), what on earth could this be?
I'm at a loss. I feel like I need to start completely over again
Any input is very appreciated!
At least the bristlenoses got another batch of babies.

After your move you are still getting the same water supply? Could there be old corroded lead pipes in your new place?
is there a lab that can test for pathogens in your water ? I'm at a loss as you say they are symptonless

Wow that is strange... Maybe check the water supply? The company may have put something in the water recently?

I highly doubt this since the water is of much better quality here than it was in the previous place we lived (it practically reeked of chlorine...). I don't honestly know how to go about getting to know this either :/
I lost Raven last night as well, so now I'm down to just Honey
Tested the water, it's perfect as usual, and the plants started blooming and looking much healthier too, so I've got a good feeling about it though... it might be solving itself

Oh Nossie, I'm so sorry to hear about your fish dying. I know how frustrating it is, and I was in a stuper as to why my Sherbert and Tangerine went when they did. I think these guys are just really sensative and things happen, and sometimes we may never know. I am sorry though and hope if there is a reason, you can determine what it is before you start over. Thinkng of you and sending hugs.

Either this is ideopathic....that is stress-related/genetic , or you have a harmful bacterium or parasite in your tank.
To be on the safe side, you might consider disinfecting the tank, gravel and all equipment, and replace all filter media.....that is start again with a new, clean set up...I know that would be a complete pain in the %**, but it is the only way that you can be sure
It is a possibility that your plants are flowering due to stress...many plants go to seed/ effloresce under stress; animals also breed when under stress
I am sorry for your loss....hope things work out for you

When this happened to me I had to relook at my stocking levels and I added a new filter. But that seem to be covered in your tank.

orandagal: Aww, thank you
It's much appreciated
scrivens: I am actually leaning towards it being the stress from moving, it was really, really rough. I mean they had to be dumped into really cold water and I could only save 40 liters of old water :/ Honey is doing great and hasn't shown any symptoms whatsoever since we moved. I changed more water today and it seems to be going well
And how about the bristlenoses? Shouldn't they also be somehow affected? Both are acting the way they always did and, as I said, they've laid another batch of eggs
This is really tricky. Wish I got noob problems like a nitrite spike or something...
I'll be keeping an eye on things, and if Honey stays healthy and happy and the water stays perfect, I think I might try my luck with a few more goldfish (and by a few I mean at most 3 for now..)
fantailer: Yes, it more or less is. Slightly underfiltered, but that won't harm anything if it's understocked as well
I'll be careful for now and be ttly religious with the water changes xD (Though I sleep during days now mostly..)

The cold water could have really shocked them nossie; however not saving much Old water shouldn't have made too much difference as most of the beneficial bacteria are in the gravel and filter media
The Bristlenoses breeding is difficult to reconcile with a toxic bacterium/pathogen....However many animals will breed when environmentally threatened...so who knows?
I had quite a few apple snails die recently and the females laid a clutch of eggs each, only a day or two before they died......the water was fine for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites.., but those snails knew something I didn't
What sort of goldies are you thinking of getting Nossie?

I forgot to mention one more thing about the plants, the first month or so they looked really bad. All covered in algae and they wouldn't grow the way they used to, that's what's looking up right now
There's also some more green algae growing on the rocks etc. Green algae is a good sign, or so it says.
The fish-guy just got a batch of lovely little goldfish last week, there were some silvery moors, some calicos, a ryukin and some spotty goldies
I don't actually have any special plans on which kinds to get, I'll just choose those that will speak to me the most. I'd love to have some more moors this time around though.

Hey Nossie, have you tested the hardness of the water? I.e. GH and KH?
I was just reading on another forum someone having issues with their fancies and they couldn't find any problems until they tested the hardness and found their water was too soft, which was potentially causing them issues. Could be something to check in with the tank and tap water?

I honestly haven't ever tested that in this tank
Next time I'll be testing I could try and see if that's anything to worry about, but I highly doubt it since goldfish don't really care about the hardness of the water, it would have to be pretty extreme in order to get them that sick, I think... but yeah, thanks for the heads up
On another note, I'm getting so happy, everything seems to be working like it should with the tank by now, Honey eats well and is really active, the plants are looking beautiful and growing taller like before. Hoping I could add some little babies safely soon.

It's true, while it might not have been the cause for deaths, it could have been a reason.
I know they say that Goldfish can adapt as long as you keep it stable, but if the hardness in the two places was different, it could have added to the stress of the situation?
Also just for reference, from the other forum one of the members mentioned that ideal hardness is KH - 80ppm, but 160ppm can be better, GH- at least 150ppm.
Glad to hear Honey is doing well
She must be a toughie!

I assumed that most things about the water was different in both places
And especially when the temperature was so different as well I imagine it was quite a shock... :c
Thank you, I'll let you know what the tests show
