One fancy goldfish should never live in a tank smaller than 20 gallons (80 liters), because of the space limitations in a 10 gallon, you can then keep two goldfish in the same tank. Goldfish always enjoy company, so why squeeze ONE lonely goldfish into a tank that's too small?
Ideal for a fancy would be living alone in a 20 gallon tank, or keeping two of them in a 30 or 40 gallon (120 or 160liter) tank.
Minimum for one comet, considering that they need their space would be a 40 gallon (160 liter) but yet again, they enjoy the company, so I'd keep two in a 60 gallon (240 liter), minimum.
Ideal: As huge as you can get and then counting 20 gallons per fish.

Ireiden:: HA! Absolutely. There's nothing to debate about, anyone keeping smaller tanks with more goldfish do that just because they have no idea what they're doing, not because they believe a goldfish can do with less space.
My platy tank is full of babies.
