Rectangular vs. Hexagon

Which tank is better, rectangular ones or hexagon?  I'm looking to buy a 10 gallon tank for my fishie.  The hexagon one i'm looking at is taller rather then wider.  The rectangular one is wider rather then taller.  Does it matter which one I pick?  Are they both good or is one better (for the fishy) or is it just space wise?  thanks for any help - greatly appreciated.  Smiley

They both come with filters and the other stuff, just basically asking if deeper is the same as wider in a fish happiness level.  Cheesy

I dont think there is really a difference as to which is better. I mean, they both have their benefits, and they both have downsides. I mean, it really depends. I would personally get a rectangualr one, as the fish would have more room to swim (especially if your fish likes to hang out at the bottom, like Sonorus, who was in a bowl for two years of her life)

It all comes down to space and personal preference I guess. and cost. all that. Fish happiness.. well, a rectangular one that is lengthier would be easier to decorate with plants, giving the fish room to weave around them. a hexagonal one woulnt give as MUCH room to decorate, but you can still landscape pretty nice.

Also, a rectangular one would give your fishy more room to grow. at least, thats what I think. a taller and thinner one just doenst give the fish room to really fill out I dont think.. anyway, thats my take. hope it helped!

RECTANGULAR!!!!!! I brought a hexagonal one and it was a bad choice. It's incredibly hard to siphon and all around it's just a d*mb shape for a fish tank. Kat is 100% right with everything she said and I've had both and I'm never going hexagonal again. I can't wait until I get a rectangular one.

Wider tanks are better for goldfish because the surface area is bigger. Meaning, greater gas exchange, more oxygen... etc. Which are crucial for goldfish.

So whenever possible, ALWAYS get rectangular tanks, that are long and wide rather than deep.

yay gas exchange... ^^ so rectangular. Smiley they are easier to clean.


My biggest piece of advise though: keep the thing away from direct sunlight or youre gonna run into all sorts of algae problems

the taller tanks are not a good for the fish. how often do u see a fish swimming straight up and down. they most move east west not north south.

Rectangular, they also DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE on the fish ( accordind to water pressure ) they also provide a bigger surface to oxygenate the water.

Rectangular...

Fish gets bored if they just swim around and around - so a rectangular tank gives you a way to design there swim path, so its not just a circle.

They have a very short memory - so if it takes a while to get around the tank, they are more stimulated.

Absolutely 100% RECTANGULAR!!!!
Hexagon's are pretty but junk in my opinion.  Not great at all for a goldfish for the same reasons everyone has listed here! Cheesy

Aye! also rectangular ones are more practical for the home, they just fit everywhere

Andrea, eventually you'll upgrade, our first tank was a hexagonal too, but we learned very quick, as it was TOO SMALL to start with and people at that petshop said "oh yes, this is plenty for 2 little fish" GRRRRRRRRRRR sometimes .... I think those people know nothing, they only wanna sell
