Really worried!
« on: May 14, 2012, 07:45:36 PM »

There is something wrong with my shubunkin Merle! He had what I believ was a worm hanging from his chin I went to the pet shop and the gave me some interpet anti crustacean parasite to treat the tank with. I added the measured out the dosage and added it to te tank 2 days after I added the treatment the worm had gone but he started having white stringy poop. I'm not sure what the perametets of the tank were but the water had gone a horrible colour as they need cleaning everyday but I couldn't because of the treatment. I changed te water it is now clear but his poop is still white and stringy, he also seems a little lethargic and tonight isn't all that interested with his food. I looked it up and it says that it could be down to stress as he is in a 60litre tank with a comet and the tank is too small ( I am getting a new tank tomorrow) and the comet has been getting aggressive the last week and I believe he killed one of my butterfly plecs. Could his be what is upsetting him or could it be something else. I am just worried with him having the worm, but flash keeps chasing him and pinning him down on the floor. I am really worried about please someone help me. I have added some aquarium salt to see if it will perk him up a bit. Was this the right thing to do. I don't want him to die before he gets to enjoy his new tank. Sad

Even if he survives to live in the bigger tank he might still be subjected to Flashes bullying. I think goldfish can sense when another in the tank is sick or hurt and they bully that fish either to eleminate it as a weakness in the group or to try and jump up in the tank heirachy. If you can I would seperate him into a smaller tank with a filter so he can recover without the stress of being bullied. But that's just what I would do...I'm not an expert. I'm sure some one more experienced will come around to advise something.

This.

And I also wonder if there was a worm in the first place, people tend to be really paranoid (no offense) about fish disease and symptoms reacting on the smallest spot as something horrible while it's only natural. It might be that this medicine hurt your fish a lot more than a simple concentration of salt would have. There aren't many parasites that survive a .3% solution of salt in the water and it's a much safer way to treat goldfish, particularly if they're kept in too small environments.
If I were you, I'd just keep up the water changes and try separating these fish asap. Remember that it's possible that these will not ever be able to live together after this and take that into consideration later on.
What are you feeding your fish? Smiley

Flakes, pellets, freeze dried bloodworms, Daphnia, brine shrimp, cucumber, spinach and they get frozen food once a week. They have been living together happily for 5 months and for some reason Merle still follows him around. Although flash started bullying Merle before Merle was ill and I thought at first that the thing on his chin was and injury I added salt which didn't work, so I asked at a fish shop and they said that I should use this treatment and withing two days it had gone.

Hi Vic, as I mentioned on facebook, white stringy poop can be caused by stress.

I would definitely separate them, even with a divider in the tank until you can get the bigger one and keep an eye on Merle.
If there is something wrong with, you'll find out pretty soon as other symptoms will show up and you can then treat accordingly. But it might be hard to spot things if Flash is constantly being a bully.

Here's a little article on stringy white poop, I'll re-post it here for you, as it is also on facebook (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

Also just to check, did you finish the required course of the last medication?

I have my 180 litre tank set up now and flash is in there. So we will see how Merle does, see if he perks up a bit.

He senna better today. I haven't seen him do a poo yet but he has eaten and is swimming around with his dorsal fin up, so everything looks good. I will keep a close eye on him though just incase!

If the dorsal fin is up, that's good......I often think what our fish tell us by their behavior etc. is more important than any water quality test Grin

Thats very true. He has really perked up now think the small space and flash were just starting to stress him out. I mean to be fair Flash wasn't being nasty to him as such he just kept running him over, he is bigger and more powerful than Merle so if he got in the way Flash would just go straight threw him.
