I noticed some black on the fins of my fish after treating them as well.
It took about a week or two for mine to completely disappear!

I had some black spots on the tail on one of my fish when I got her Smiley But it went away in a few months... there were some small pieces of the tips of her tail missing too, so that's probably why it took longer to heal! Smiley

That's good.

Do you know, should I have done something different so that he didn't get the black marks, or is that something that can't be avoided?

It's pretty hard to avoid yes... unless you'll be careful in the future and quarantine everything new, fish AND plants, that you want to add to the tank so you don't have to use the strong medications Smiley That way the eco system in the tank will stay intact, and the fish won't have to be hurt by ammonia Smiley

Ten days after the black marks started showing... and they are starting to go away!  Yea!!

Almost ready to shout woooooohooooooooo!   Cheesy

As you can tell, this has been a tough time for me, lots of learning, and you all helped a lot!  Thanks again!!  I hope to never go thru this again.  Velvet is a NASTY disease.

Yes, I know how stressful it can be to treat sick fish. Smiley
I don't think I hardly slept when I went through the bout with ich.
I was up during the night checking the fish with a flashlight. Smiley
Then my sister adopted a fish and it came down with dropsy so I was trying to help her with her fish too.
luckily he came through it just fine and she learned alot too.
I think anytime a pet whether it's a dog, cat, fish bird, guinea pig, whatever is sick, we feel so helpless.
We love our pets so much we want them to be healthy and happy all of their lives!
It's so nice to know that you care so much about your little fish friend!
That means you are a very caring and loving and special person! Wink

Thanks Hanna, that helps.  Did your new tank go thru any mini-cycle at all?  

Did any of the fish get stressed, or were they completely comfortable right away?  Smiley

Great idea about growing your own plants, too.

There was a mini cycle, but not bad. Kept monitoring the water chemistry and did water changes accordingly.
Sunshine was affected with a tad of finrot, maybe a small injury when I netted her out and in, but treated with Melafix and Pimafix. Other than that no major problems and all fishes are happy and healthy.

This shows how important it is to test the water regularly and observe the fishies. Doing this you can treat asap in very early stages.

This tank still had a slight ammonia reading, approximately .2.  I was changing 10% water every other day, and now after researching, I've upped it to  20% every other day.

I finally bought some Prime yesterday and put enough in for the full tank.  I used a different water conditioner for the 20% water change.

I have 2 questions that I should probably ask Seachem, but I'd rather ask you all, since you actually use the product.  Smiley


1)  On the Prime web site it says that Prime dissipates in 24 hours.  To solve my ammonia problem, am I supposed to dose the whole tank every day, or just the new water during water changes?

2)  Will my tank become dependent on the Prime, or can I go back to my regular water conditioner once the ammonia is gone?

P.S.  Reading the Seachem web site, it looks like Prime uses formaldehyde as well.

I can't help much since I'm not regularly using any Seachem products, but I'm pretty sure that your tank will do just great without this particular water conditioner! I've switched a couple of brands myself without any problems Smiley

Hi.  This is an update on Flash.  He is looking more beautiful every day as more black ammonia marks have gone away!   Smiley

I am still doing a 20% water change every other day, and adding Prime to the tank every day, and adding Stability once in a while.  Still have a slight ammonia reading that should be going away, but at least now it's non-toxic thanks to the Prime.

Today I did a filter media change on my healthy tank, and put that media into this tank, to help build up the good guys and get rid of this ammonia.

There was some white build-up on the outside of the filter that I had to clean off, and on the cover of the tank near the filter.  Is that from the salt that I put in during the progressive salt treatment?  Just wondering if that was normal.

Yes, it is most likely from the salt. Smiley
You can use plain white vinegar to take that off and then wipe with plain water to take the residue of the vinegar off. Vinegar won't hurt your fish or water but too much of it could lower your pH! Smiley
