White stuff on my fish's head?
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:25:57 PM »

Hello. I have a black fantail goldfish and today I noticed on her head what looks almost like peeling skin, or maybe like she swam through some cobwebs and they're stuck on her. She's in a 5 gallon tank and I did a 50% water change just Sunday. I'm not sure of all the levels of everything, but I have an ammonia detector and it's zero. I've had her for about a month, I rescued her from Walmart and about 2 days after I got here she had a little fungus on her tail, I did a medication cycle and she's been fine ever since. She's still swimming around normally and ate fine when I fed her. Also, I'm currently cycling a 30 gallon tank and will move her into something more suitable soon. After a couple hours I checked back and it doesn't so much look like peeling skin anymore as just big white patches on her head. Like all the detached peeling looking pieces came off or something. I'm positive it's not ick. It doesn't look like fungus, but maybe it's just odd looking fungus. Also, I use aquarium salt and of course have purified the water to remove the toxins. I have a couple of pictures, but unfortunately they're not too great. The spot between her eyes is where it is, but it's white, not brown like it looks. AND...it may just be reflection from the light and too much worry, but it may also be at the base of her fins. I don't normally have such dark goldfish, so the light often tricks me. Any help for her would be great!

Possibly lost a scale..I can't really make out much from your pics

If the goldfish is acting fine, dorsal erect etc. then wait it out and see how he/she goes on

I should keep up the large water changes as nitrates will build up  quickly in that tank Smiley

Thanks! When I came home today though, the white stuff was gone, most traces of all of it. There's a few little faint white spots around, but that's all. Petsmart is the closest pet store to me, and they said she may have had fungus and ick, so I got some medicine from them, I figured I'd run it through just in case.
