For mature goldfish, most of the time the males will chase the females around during the breeding season. Female goldfish will also have a fuller abdomen than the males. During breeding season which occur during the Spring and warmer months  if the goldfish live in a pond, the male goldfish will have little white dots that resemble pimples on the cover of their gills.

Trying to tell the gender for young goldfish that is less than a year old can be a little difficult. You will probably need to wait till the goldfish reach breeding age to tell for sure.
