Stocking levels for "half sizes"?

I have two 55 gallon tanks and in a few days one will have 6 small fantails. I know this is technically "crowded" and I can house one or two elsewhere if I must but I'm wondering...what if I have extra filtration, can I keep them in there semi-permanently? Keep in mind that these are all Petsmart fish and probably won't reach full size (the girls are a year old and only 3-4"). Let me know your thoughts.

Hmmmm why not just have 5 fantails instead of 6?

I still think that 5 is a maximum in that tank, it's just good to have the extra 5 gallons...
