I have one beautiful, well-fed, active goldfish in a ten gallon nicely decorated tank. Sushi, Princess of the Seas, used to pull up her fresh-water plants and eat them. I have replaced them with plastic plants, and i can see she's not happy with them. How can I stop her from ripping up her plants? Also, I bought her a couple of snails, and they rapidly multiplied and now I have ten little snails. Is it possible to have too many snails in the tank? I drew a heart on the side of the tank, and trained Sushi to go to it and pose for photographs by tapping on it, drawing her to it, before feeding. It's so cute!!! Now when she wants to be fed she goes to her heart.  Shocked

What snails did you get? Yes they can overpopulate and very quickly, but I really need to know what type of snail you bought.

I'm not sure what species they were, but they were pink-ish coral colored, and the older, originals. died, leaving behind offspring, so now I ten mini-snails. I keep the tank clean, but I hesitated in using an anti-algqe chemical, but I see Sushi eating it and the snails are all over it. Should I be concerned when the snail population keeps growing, or shoud I remove a few now? I saw two of them mating today - slowly.

Yeah its a good idea to remove some and always be on the look out for eggs of you find any destroy them. You might not be able to get all of them though. If I'm honest apple snails are the best to keep with fish, they are also sexed and lay bright pink eggs which are easy to notice and destroy.

You might consider upgrading to an appropriate sized tank before adding anything; your fish needs at least 30 gallons to thrive.

I agree with Scrivens, I believe 10 gallons is only 40 litres?

With fancy goldfish, the recommended stocking I've seen is 20 gallons for the first fish and then 10 gallons for each additional fish thereafter Smiley

As for the plant, it looks like elodea densa, a very tasty plant for goldfish Cheesy I wouldn't worry too much about her eating it, I have some elodea that my goldfish loves to munch on.
I wouldn't worry too much about the algae either, you can just clean it off the glass with an old credit card or something similar.
In my goldfish's tank I left an entire side for the algae to grow on and she loves to graze on it.

As for the snails, I am not sure what breed they are? Pinkish coloured? Could they be Pink Ramshorn snails?

Except for getting a bigger tank for your little sweetheart, you should also stop using any chemicals to kill algae, it isn't needed. To battle algae you could go buy some live plants like anubias, java fern or cryptocoryne. All these are plants that goldfish can't/won't eat and they'll grow strong root systems under the gravel. Just put some pebbles around the base of the plant to keep Sushi away from digging too close while the roots develop.

I'm goingto re-locate a few of the baby snails to my boyfriends tank. I haven't actually seen any eggs or anything that looks like eggs - what should i be looking for? I didn't use the algicide in the tank - wasn't comfortable about putting chemicals in the water. I wipe down the glass with a clean cloth and that seems to work okay. She is an especially fine looking fish, and she's growing really fast, so I think I'll take your advise and get a bigger tank and try agan with the live plants. Thanks! Smiley

Do you have any pictures of the snails you have got. I didn't think you could actually buy ramshorns Skwishee? It depends on the breed of snails you have as to what you are looking for in the way of eggs.

I have seen Ramshorn snails for sale in a Garden centre once before and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the more unique  and unusual colours were being sold  Smiley
