I think we shocked the snail when we did a water change last week. Maybe the water was too cold. Anyway, how to tell if he is dead or he went dormant because of the cold water?

The only way I know of is to wait for a couple of weeks. While you wait I'd test the water a lot because a dead snail could make amnonia sky rocket

Well, I took the snail out and put him in  a jar because I thought he was moving a little and I wanted to see better. It seems like it is retracting into the shell and occasionally putting a bit of itself out of the shell once and a while. I will probably put him back in the tank tonight. I think he's still alive but don't know why he's hiding for so long.

First of all, you should be careful to put too cold water in, it'll shock the other fish as well Smiley Try to get the new water to be almost the same as the main tank! For starters you can use a simple glass thermometer for that, they're super cheap, but once you'll have done it a few times, you'll be able to feel the correct temp Smiley It would be ideal to have the water only 1-2 degrees colder/warmer than the tank water Smiley
