Hi acamp, I really wasn't too sure on the thinking of starting off with a smaller pond, seeing how it goes and then building a bigger pond. It doesn't make any sense to me, to build something that's too small for a fish and see how it goes, when it's not going to go well if they do not have their basic requirements met in the first place. Now I know a lot of us here don't have koi, so I got in touch with someone on another forum I belong to who does, because I personally don't know much about koi to be giving any advice. Andy T (a.k.a Koinut) who I contacted is one of the forum's moderators and is also a Koi and Pond Specialist, so he knows what his talking about First he gave me a link to this really useful thread- ( Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)
It has all the basics you need to know about Koi The second post underneath it is some information written by Dr Paula Reynolds (BSc PhD BA) who owns Licolnshire Fish Health, the information is with particular regards to keeping koi in small volumes of water. From Andy's message, he told me the 160 gallon pond is too small, even now and a 600 gallon pond, still won't be big enough, the reason for this, is pretty much summed up with what he told me about koi growth- "A lot of Koi will reach a foot long in their first year..this is not at all uncommon and they grow quickly in the first few years. I have 4 year old Koi that are well over 2 and a half feet long." I know this is a lot of information to take on board, so please take your time to read and understand it. If you have any more questions then please ask and I will do my best to get the answers

Acamp, I am sorry if I offended you. I wasn't trying to criticize you in anyway, I was trying to help you, which is why I went and asked someone who keeps koi and is an expert on another forum for advice to give you. I have no plans to keep koi, but I am planning a pond for my goldfish, so I am learning a lot about ponds myself And because I live in the UK, I have to plan for the winter, otherwise my future pond could potentially freeze, which is the reason I mentioned about that, as I had no idea where you were
