Spitting Gravel
« on: October 15, 2010, 09:33:10 PM »

I just saw Batal (my black moor) spitting gravel in the tank. I'm really curious - why do goldfish "spit gravel"? Is is a game? A territorial thing?

If I see any of my fish doing it again, I'll try and take a pic and show ya'll.

Goldfish look for food that way Smiley
It's how they did in the wild, finding worms and other small pieces of food in the mud that way Cheesy My goldies do it all the time Wink
It's cutest when there's a big bunch of goldfish tight together looking for food like that, they look like a little ball of fins and mouths Wink

Yep completely normal as Nossie explained. Some of the food I feed my fish currently sinks into the gravel so they do that then especially. I currently have two goldfish in two different tanks as one is being quarantined and they both have tendency to suck the gravel at the same time, very cute Smiley

I like it when my big goldfish dive into the gravel nose first and swish their heads around and take in a big bunch of gravel aggressively.  What clowns they are and so fun to watch!! Grin

Lol, just a very very normal behaviour for goldfish, also a sign that they are happy and healthy.
Should see our Hepsiba, she's a specialist in doing this: she sucks the gravel, turns her head while spitting it out creating a new heap of gravel in another spot  Cheesy

Mom's fantails used to re-arrange their tank, moving the gravel where they wanted it so that there were big holes here and there with barely any d: They'er also spitting it out onto the glass now and then, so you can hear little scraping noises from the tank Wink
