Ok..tell us about your tank
How big is it?
How long has it been set up?
How old and what type of goldfish are they?
How often do you change the water & how much?
what sort of filtration do you have?
Have you tested the water parameters, and what are the readings?

Also does the tank have a light on it and if it does how long do you leave it on for?
Is the tank set up anywhere where the sun shines straight on them?
And I'm sorry to ask this but does your son tap on the glass?

Sounds a lot like some water quality issues, fish usually dart around like that when they're being irritated by the pH or ammonia.
Please tell us how big the tank is, for how long you had it and the fish. Do you have a test kit as well to test the water parameters?
