Common Goldfish?

My husband and I sort of inherited these fish with a 55 gallon tank we got when my work closed down their location. We are pretty sure they are 'common goldfish', but I don't have a lot of experience with fish. Is there a way to tell how old they are? They are both about 4" from nose to the tip of their tail. One has a 'black' band across the top 'lip' (pardon me if that's not the right term lol). They were in a pond before one of our employees 'donated' them.

Yes, they're commons.
There really isn't a way to tell growth wise (credit to Nossie!) without pulling a scale off and counting the rings, but there is no way age is that important!

(Thank you, Bronzie, I'll hand some karma to ya
)
Your fish will probably live for another 10 years anyway, so if you don't want goldfish, you should maybe give them away instead of wait until their demise
(It just sounded a bit like that's what you're waiting for).
Generally, please change the water and vacuum the gravel once a week, take out 50% of the water every time, that will keep them really healthy and happy

I hope you do keep them. Fish are wonderful, relaxing pets. If you watch them and interact with them, you'll be surprised at how smart they are and how quickly you get attached to them. As a cute story relating to that, a friend of my father's got a huge tank and put some perch and bluegill in it, intending to keep them there until they were ready to be eaten. They would wiggle and swim happily when she came to feed them, watched her through the glass, and did all sorts of cute antics when she came near. Instead of being dinner, the fish ended up as her pets.
Okay, this story wasn't really about fish care, but it shows that fish can become unexpected friends.

I agree with Nicole. Fish are so relaxing and fun.
They can even interact with you, but that's what nicole said; most people don't think so.

Fish are very social and I think goldfish are more so than a lot of others... I can sit infront of my tank and loose track of time. Enjoy your new pets.

I have every intention of keeping them :-) I was just curious to know how long they might live. I know we had them at work for at least a year, and the girl who had them before had them for a while. My husband nor I can believe how pretty they are, my hubby is NOT a huge fan of goldfish (he much prefers cichlids), but he loves these 2 little guys. Is there any way to tell their sexes?

When they get about 6inch-ish the male goldfish have breeding tubercules on their sides. they're little white dots, I believe. The females look rounder, because they're full of eggs. This happens during breeding season. So, if they're not around that size yet, give it a few months or a year.

nice answer Bronzie, just like to add that they also get the breeding tubercules on the front edge of their pectoral flippers/fins (credit Hanna for that answer) and the ones on their sides I have found are concentrated in front of the gill area. cheers > Ron
Just like to add that you can just see the breeding tubercules on this image of my ryukin Bowie here at (
