URGENT! PLEASE HELP! Pearlscales all Dieing!
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:27:30 PM »

*NOTE* These fish are not around me, but were a present to someone. I can relay all informationed given/needed but I dont have instant answers.

We bought 9x baby pearl scales (about 1 1/2 inches long) about a week ago. They looked nice and healthy.

We had to drive them about 2 hours back home as we were out of town, the storeowner said she ships fish overnight so it's no big deal, she loaded them in a large plastic bag, filled it with oxygen, then put the bag in a large box that we took with us.

They stayed in the box for probably 18-24 hours, we were told they'd do fine for 24-48 hours if necessary.

We had a 10 gallon tank just for them (used), once home the tank was cleaned very very well, it had a lot of grimy junk on it from the previous owner, but I think it couldnt have possibly been cleaned better (HOURS worth without any chemicals or soap, just a sponge, rag, razor blade, and lots of water)

we got what we thought was everything we needed over the next 2 days:

-10 gallon tank
-water filter system
-air bubble maker thing w/ air stone
-a few moss balls
-snails (to help clean the tank)
-a box of tablets that are meant to fix the PH levels
-strips to read all levels of things in water (nitrates, ph, etc)
-heater
-lights
-food (pellets)
-salts
-stuff to fight algae

Yetserday, a fish was noticed to be swimming at the top of the tank sideways, it died over the night. Today in the morning, another was seen to be acting the same way, it was dead within the next 8 hours. now more are showing it. They are dropping like flies and we dont know what to do. I don't even know where to begin with specifics, so please feel free to ask and I'll respond asap.

What we have done:
-removed the first dieing fish and put him alone in a seperate tank with the air stone to avoid contaimnation if it was disease
-had all other fish in another tank for safety
-first fish died
-put all fish back in the tank
-another fish started showing same signs
-fish died
-ran to petco, purchased an anti bacterial medication and used it. also aske dthem for tips and the store owner we originally purchased from. We were told by the store owner we bought from that they need to be around 80 degress water, the tank was around 70 as she previously told us they need a "nice cold temperature" when originally bought. we've since turned the heater on to try and get the temp up. Petco however told us we need a cool temperature for these fish.
-2 more are now showing signs the first 2 did.

I don't want all these fish to die. We will do whatever it takes, just please point us in the right direction

*edit* I'd also like to note we've tested the nitrates, ph, etc (everything you can test with strips) to make sure everything checks out. PH level is 7, nitrates 0, etc etc.

The most important thing you should be testing for right now is ammonia, which is probably off the charts.  My guess is your ammonia reading is so high any fish you put in that tank will die very quickly.

In order to keep these fish for the long term, you will need to invest about $1000-$1500 worth of fish related equipment. I'm not sure you did your research before purchasing these fish.

To keep 9 pearlscales require at least a 100 gallon aquarium. 20 gallon for 1 goldfish + 10 gallon for each additional goldfish.

I suggest you call the local pet shops around your area as soon as possible and donate your fish to them  for free. If you insist on selling the goldfish to them , they will likely decline.

You currently do not have the knowledge or the equipment to keep these goldfish alive. If you decide to keep them, my guess is all of them will die.

Right now test your ammonia level and post it here. Next do 60 to 70 percent water change immediately and use a dechlorinator to remove chlorine in the tap water.  Make sure the new water has about the same temperature as the old water in your 10 gallon aquarium.

Things i suggest you do research on --- cycling an aquarium and proper tank size for goldfish.

If you have any more questions just ask.

I agree with the previous poster. You didn't have a safe, cycled tank for these fish to land in after the stressful travel. They poisoned themselves with the huge load of biological waste and died, most likely from ammonia poisoning as there is no way the filter of a tiny tank like that would be able to deal with it.

You should give these fish away, absolutely, because even if you'd get a larger tank they'd probably die in the small one before you'd be able to move them over. If you'd move them right away, they could be harmed by the lack of biological filtration in the new tank as well. Your best bet is getting a new tank and starting over with new fish.

A 55 gallon is usually a good size for three goldfish to live happily ever after, especially if you'd take care to cycle the tank prior to buying any fish for it.

As of now only 3 are still alive.

After reading the responses to my questions and a lot of online research, it looks like we were the victims of a shop that only wanted to make a quick buck. We showed them everything we had and asked them for every detail they could give us over caring for these fish, and everything we have done was because we were specifically told to do so by them.

If any are alive by the time work is over, we'll more htan likely be donating them to the local aquarium, it beats them dieing I suppose.

Thanks for the tips ev eryone. I've had fishtanks in the house growing up, but we never did anything beyond add a few fish every few years, it seemed to thrive fine in its own right. Never realzied goldfish would possibly require such an amount of care, I just wish the shop told us instead of just hand them over knowing the level of knowledge and equipment we had for what we were about to purchase.

I wish that it were possible to prosecute these pet shops. Angry

Dragonskull I am so sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience.

Unfortunately from what I've found shops have amazing knowledge on tropical fish and even marine if they stock them, but not so much with goldfish. I learnt like you, the hard way, that our own research is much better than relying on a shop.

If later on down the line, you feel you'd like to keep goldfish again, feel free to pop by with any questions, the members here have excellent knowledge from keeping fancy goldfish themselves.
What do you think you'll do with the 10 gallon tank once you've re-homed the pearl scales? There is a small number of options for a tank that size, if you still wish to keep fish.

Best of luck with the remaining goldfish, I am so sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience.

I suppose most people would do some research at least for the basics of how to keep a dog or a cat before they would buy any... same rules for fish, they need to be cared for too Smiley And most of the time, pet shops don't care much about fish because they don't make any noise if they're uncomfortable. They also import fish in such large quantities and can easily sell them off for cheap, so why not just get rid of as many as possible? Undecided
Maybe you should find a better pet shop?

we asked them for specifics over what exactly we need to do to care for these guys. We didn't just grab them and stick them in a tank, we were just ill advised by a crappy chinese petstore.

Two left, one dieing.

Called the petstore to ask if they'd offer a refund or replacement, they said no, but they'd discount us (amount depends on what we buy)

frankly though, a minute discount isn't worth handing them more money I don't think.

We're still trying to keep both fish alive, though one will probably be dead by the this time tomorrow. We've gotten the slime stuff for hte bio wheel, a proper water test kit, and are doing 2 flushes of water a day (up to 75% depending on the ammonia readout) We wont be giving up until they've all died, if we can keep just one alive, at least we accomplished SOMETHING in this mess.

If they all die, we'll be starting over, and thanks to all the help we've received online I have much higher hopes for the next round.

Thanks everyone for your support and help

As for the tank, once this is said and done, if any of the pearl scales live we will keep them(it) in the small tank for probably a few weeks until we get a proper sized one for him, and we'll be getting the 10g situated PROPERLY tihs time, and try again. This second round though we'll be doing a lot of research ourselves in communities like this one to find out what we want, we've learned a valuable lesson in trusting pet stores to give sound advice thanks to this.

Absolutely not worth the bother :/ why would you want to go there for a small discount when they already tricked you into a bad experience? And they sit around there expecting that you'd want to do more business with them? Hard to believe the nerve of some people.

Good to hear you're not giving up Smiley Most people would have left the forum after tossing a few insults around and just not giving half a **** about the fish. It's a very nice change to see someone who cares Smiley

I really hope it'll be sorted out and you could keep at least one Smiley
