sounds like ich to me. There are plently of treatments for that. many petstores carry stuff to treat it. I used something called Nox-Ich, but im sure melafix does the trick too. I'm not sure on specifics (my advice is always read directions on the bottle or ask someone else! )

If treated right away your fish will survive. ^^ Don't worry!

Thats a serious accusation. you don't know how he changes his tank or not. and no, rock salt is not a cure for everything. The most it does is aid in the development and the function of gills. Unless you can prove me otherwise by providing a scholarly article that says rock salt cures all fish diseases. Then I might reconsider my stance. but as of now I'm fairly sure Rock salt can't cure everything.


ANYWAY... To me it sounds like ich. just make sure hes separated from any other fish in a hospital tank, change about 10 - 20 percent of the water every day.. or just do what i do: read directions on the meds:)

Some of the causes of the oil in the water are insufficient maintenance, overfeeding, or perhaps malfunctioning aquarium equipment.

Wash your hands - Natural oil on your skin or from lotions can get into the water if you place your hands in the aquarium without first washing your hands.

Cooking oil - If the tank is in the kitchen or next to it, tiny droplets of oil in the air that result from cooking food can get into the water.

Fish food - Many fish foods have oil in them, so overfeeding can cause some oil on the surface if there is infrequent water changes and not enough water circulation.

Aquarium equipment - Oil can come from the filter and air pump since oil is used to lubricate moving mechanical parts.

Fish wastes and dead fish - Decomposing fish wastes and dead fish can cause oily residue.


Since you mentioned some of the fish dying , i would check the equipment first to make sure they are not leaking oil into the water, then go down the list and check things from there.
