setting up my forty gallon
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:49:27 AM »

So I finally got the forty decently cleaned and set up ... Ish. I have a marineland 200B filter and a top fin power filter for a ten gallon both going on it, I have a top fin 200 watt submersible heater and an aerator and a basic hood even though only half works right now lol. We still need some gravel and a vacuum and driftwood ( we have some java moss on the way)

This tank is going to be for my 12 year old marbled kissing gourami and his new buddy ... Is there anything else I need? We are resealing the tank this week so they can go in it friday Smiley

We have the basics like nets and different foods and meds and test kits and of course water conditioner Smiley

Wow! Congratulations! Smiley
I don't know these filters too well, but I believe they'll be alright at least for a while! You could always be on the lookout for something with a better size later on Wink
What's wrong with the hood? If it's only a light bulb that's broken, you should buy a new one, your plants will be sad otherwise Wink And I definitely recommend plants! All fish feel safer if there's somewhere for them to hide Smiley

Do you have any beneficial bacteria? That would be the last thing on the list for now Wink It's great to use while the tank is cycling Smiley

It might be just the starter that is bad too.  The starter is real easy and very cheap to replace. Wink

The hood won't work at all and it isn't the bulb... I'm gonna try replacing the starter and I have the filters running on a cycled tank so no need for beneficial bacteria since it'll instantly cycle. Smiley

Are you going to use any gravel from the cycled setup? Otherwise, you'll have to cycle the tank anyway. I used only gravel and some "dirty" water from the cycled tank (along with beneficial bacteria) and I had mine cycled and ready after 12 days Wink

I cant cycle the tank ... the filter needs to be with the fish .. there wont be any gravel in the new tank at first ... then I plan to take about half of the gravel out of the ten and put it in the forty in addition to new gravel ... and both filters will be cycled... Plus about 4 gallons from the ten gallon cuz my fish has to be moved ... will that be enough for me to not have to wait for a spike? The fish have to move as soon as I move the filter.

Maybe? But it'd be good if you'd leave the tank to stand (after adding beneficial bacteria) for at least two-three days before you add the first fish.
I didn't add all of them at once either, just because it felt safer Smiley

Both fish are being added at the same time. Its two marbled kissing gourami's ... And if i move everything there that means my fish wont have sufficient filtration for a week ( we only go to his moms house every weekend but my fish needed the bigger tank ) should i just do daily WC's ?

Neh, if you have two filters, leave one in each tank Smiley That'll be fine Smiley

When I moved my fish, I just siphoned some water out in a bucket, moved them there and stole the gravel + plants for the new tank, then I moved them back and added some fresh water. They did just great until the final move! Cheesy

Neeh, I believe you could fit more fish there later Smiley But do let the tank cycle with these two gouramis at first and then you can consider the stocking levels Smiley You know that these kissing ones grow pretty big, right? Wink

No problem Smiley they are actually marbled kissing gourami"s I know of noone else who has them. The tank is gonna be a little bare for a while since the most important part is upgrading them... And my hamster chewed out of her cage so I had to use money that was gonna go towards the tank for her cage.

I just got paid so I went and got new food ( Omega one) and some cories and some nice plastic plants. Also for the hamsters I got some stuff to upgrade the cages Smiley Its all coming together well Smiley I'm gonna have 70 gallons of filtration on the tank so it supports everyone. All thats left is to move in the Kissing Gourami's and get some ghost shrimp for them to eat Smiley

I'll post pictures as soon as I can Smiley
