How can you tell if a fish is pregnant?
« on: April 27, 2012, 07:46:48 AM »

I have 2 variatus platy's, one male one female. The females belly seems to be very large and she keeps resting at the bottom of the tank or on top of their cave, she also seems to find it hard work to swim to the top of the tank and she is still eating. Could she be pregnant or is it something else?

She most likely is Wink Guppies have a "pregnant" spot on the back of their belly when they're pregnant, but I haven't really looked for it in platies yet... however the mollies we have use to get really, really round and soon enough the tank is full of fry Smiley

Thanks Nossie I can't tell if she has a black spot on her belly as she has black spots all of her back end lol! So I couldn't check for that. I kinda hope she is, they should be a nice mix as she is a tuxedo and the male is a sunset.  Cheesy

Sounds lovely! Smiley
It's amazing to watch the babies get the colors of the parents, really awesome to see them grow that way Smiley
Platy fry are by the way the fastest and most evenly growing fish fry, getting about 0.2 millimeter bigger every day! They can be considered adult at 2 months of age already!

Wow! That is awesome. Good job I have so many tanks then. If she is pregnant when they are 2 months old I am gonna try and seperate the males from the females.

I breed platys and various related livebearers. Your female platy might be sick, when my platys are pregnant you can usually see a spot, also I've noticed the babies usually take on the color of the father. If she is pregnant, when she has the babies seperate them because the parents will eat them, then to feed them I usually crush up a few pellets and they eat that, but there's also live plants in my tank that they use to hide in, so they have other microscopic animals to feed on. Good luck!

My platy babies are nearly all grown up. I seem to have had more females than males which is good as they are in seperate tanks. I am going to have to take three males to my local aquarium shop as I don't have room for them anywhere else and I really don't need anymore of them. Lol!
Actually Bluegolden all of my platy babies have taken on their mothers colouring of black and yellow with some red. Is it a normal thing for them to take the fathers colouring? As none of mine have. One or two have the sunset red mixed in with the tuxedo but they are mainly tuxedo's like the mum.
