I have a redcap oranda called Norman who shares a 27 gallon tank with a variety of other fish, they all get on and have been together for 3 yrs. Norman has been eating with the others but after feeding he spends most of his time apart from the others which he has been doing for the past month, however today he has started to float and swim around upside down, he does not seem to have a problem with boyancy and does not look distressed, Please help as i do not want to lose him.

Orandas have very sensitive digestive system due to their round bodies. That's why you NEED to feed them something else than flakes. Feed them vegetables and live foods regularly, frozen peas are ideal!

If I was you, I wouldn't feed your fish anything for two-three days. During this, you should go and buy some freeze-dried blood worms, tubifex, shrimp or krill (possibly something packed in gel too). You should buy a bag of frozen peas (NO SALT).
The day you'll start feeding you should feed only the peas, thawed and popped out of their shells.
Don't forget to test the water too! High nitrate levels can cause fish to float, and if your nitrates are high, I recommend a large water change on 50% or more.
