what DO Fish eat?

What do they eat? Huh what is in there pet food? Huh can they live on just eating peas? Huh can you makeHOME made Fish food? Huh

Goldfish need a good staple diet.  Peas are good but won't supply all the nutrition your goldfish needs.

You can make your own fish food.  There are some recipes on here involving unflavored geletin and chopped clams, shrimp, etc.

I like the store-bought food because it's easy to feed, has all the nutrients in one place, and you can get a few jars at once.  I personally use Aqueon Goldfish Granules.  Lots of people here use flakes, but I don't like that they encourage fish to gulp at the surface.  If you make your own food, be sure that it is always fresh and you don't skimp on ingrediants.
Fish also eat some "people food", as long as there isn't a lot of sugar, salt, or spice in it.  Ours likes (rinsed) salad greens, fresh, mushed-up peas, bits of carrot, and cucumber as treats.  Just treats, mind- they need, as Mindemae mentioned, a staple diet.  They will beg constantly, but don't feed them every single time they ask.  Twice a day, maybe, morning and night.  Fish also eat live plants- ask at your pet store (if they sell plants; most do) which they reccomend.

Our Goldfish are fed with:
Goldfish flakes, Goldfish Crisps, Goldfish pellets, thawed peas shelled and cut into small pieces, watermelon, strawberries, once a week frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp, veggiecube.

And they nibble on ALL the plants they've got in there too Grin

Oh, thanks everyone! I'm spend most of my day in the kitchen wich I love to bake I only eat Organic & fresh food so I'm pretty sure making Fish food will be fun for my first time I WILL buy fish food & Hanna I love your food I think I'll feed my fish what you feed yours Cheesy

I feed my goldfish 3 different kinds of pellets as staple, along with some freeze-dried live foods such as blood worms and tubifex cubes Smiley It's very important that you feed your growing goldfish with lots of protein, which can be found in these live foods!

The reason I have so many different pellets for my fish, is that I feed them two kinds a day, and usually different ones in the morning and mid-day, so they'll have a bit of variety Wink It keeps your fish healthier and happier Cheesy

I also feed them fruit and vegetables whenever I have some over Smiley

So in short, buy two kinds of good-quality staple pellets and a jar of some freeze dried live food Smiley

Kind of funny to read this thread right now- I got hungry and decided to make myself a salad, then thought, "Hey, the fish might like a salad, too."  So I made two salads: one in a bowl with Italian dressing, and one in a fish clip (guess who got which! Wink) That was about 15 minutes ago, my salad is gone, and theirs is either eaten on shredded and floating. Wink

LOL, ILOveFish19, also you should know that goldfish do have a very good sense in smelling... LOL

so if they can see you cooking in the kitchen, they will eye in every pot or cup (like ours do Grin)
and they also will smell if hubby burns the meat pies, (like ours did), LOL.. should watch their little faces then Grin
