Tailer is sick AGAIN!
« on: December 27, 2010, 12:30:52 PM »

I cannot explain this as I sat and watched him not 10 hrs ago and NONE of this was on him. I tested the water and the results are:

ammonia .25 (added extra dose of stresszyme to fresh water as my tap water is so darn high in ammonia!)
nitrites 0
nitrates 20-30
pH 7.0

Should I do a water change before treating again with fungus guard or is this something more serious? There is bloody streaking in parts of the tail and anal fins.

I took out the bio chem zorb pad (contains carbon) in the external filter when beginning treatment of the fungus. All looked fine until this morning. It's getting to the point of opening up a proverbial vein in frustration. Done everything by the book for the past 6 weeks. I know my feelings are secondary here just venting and the only thing I care about is his well being  Cry Note he has been fed antibacterial medicated food for the past week too. The only thing I did last night was feed him some fresh lettuce and today his poop was very large in diameter and the dark green from the leafy plant. It was well washed before offering it to him.

It looks like septicemia as the bloody streaks are progressing rapidly. Just did a water change added the tetra fungus guard and fed him the medicated food. There is nothing more I can do except pray for him. He's holding his fins tight to his body in the past hour since uploading the video. I'm very scared now  Cry

This time, I wouldn't be treating with anything, actually. I think the best way to help Tailer now is to keep feeding him the medicated food for a few days more, and just take care of the water quality, he should get better already by that Smiley
I feel like the reason why he's showing all these symptoms after eachother might be because of the medication tampering with the water.

Just change water and keep track of the parameters, you could add some Melafix if you have any Smiley
Take out maybe half of the water each time you notice a rise in ammonia, and add beneficial bacteria each time! If you're not already doing that, you could try dosing the bio filter-booster for the whole tank and not only the water you add. (I haven't used that many different brands, some are meant to be dosed only for the new water, some is meant to be used once a week for the whole system etc...)

I'm sure he'll be just fine, April!! Smiley

April,
With ammonia showing up I can only stress to you not to feed Mr. tailer anything for 24 hours and then feed only once a day or once every other day for the next few days until the ammonia is zero.
I would also, do a 50% water change, vacuum the waste up as you are doing it, to remove any excess food and waste.
Add to your filter, ammonia absorbing ZEOLITE chips...you can get those at petsmart.  use 1/2 cup per every 10 gallons of water.
Increase aeration....DO NOT add any salt to the tank.  add beneficial bacteria also to your filter media, double the dose.
I would also, like Nossie says keep on feeding the medicated antibiotic food.
I'm sure he'll be ok....since you are so good about cheking the water parameters often. Smiley

April, I agree with Nossie and Mindemae.
He may be stressed with the meds, I know i'ts easy overdone if you've got a bit but in this case just do like Nossie and Mindemae said.

Watch the blood vessels though, if they don't get worse it should be OK.
I noticed on Hepsiba and Skippy that when tehy grew up you can see their blood vessels in their tailfin, as those are white. But they behave very very normal and nothing changed in the appearance

I fear he is near death as he is laying on the bottom barely breathing now. His eyes are not focussing anymore and when he does move to swim a little he is bumping into the tank walls. The streaks are all over him the dorsal, pecs, tail and anal fins and it looks like the veins are bleeding within the tissue. My eyes are stinging from tears my poor boy  Cry I will just stay with him now.

April,
Go to petsmart and get teratcycline....Maryacin II by Mardel and add that to the tank.
Did you perform a water change?
He won't die, he is having trouble breathing because of the ammonia level this is irritating his gills.
April please don't give up on him.
Please go get zeolite, it will absorb the ammonia and the oxytetracycline will get rid of the bloody streaks.
Keep feeding the medicated food tho.
I'm so sorry about this.. Cry

Ok I will go now and get this. I have already added the fungus guard today can the maracyn II be added on top of this or should I switch out the water again. The gravel was vacuumed 2 days ago everything fine and just did another ammonia test after adding stresszyme earlier and it is less than the .25 or second colour on the api chart. Will def get the zeolite and oxytetracycline

Thank you Minde and Hanna, Nossie and Orandalover
I am not sure if it was this but it was the only thing different that was done. He just had an enormous poop (It was almost black like tar  Huh )and is swimming around again, his dorsal fin is more up than it was an hour ago. It will be awful if he has been poisoned! He also seems bloated or swollen but no scales protruding. Appreciate your positive input and love. Will head out as soon as my friend arrives to pick me up shortly.

If you decide to treat with tetracycline I have heard you should not use any other treatment while using it, it is very strong stuff and can actually make your fish look a bit sick. Also you need to follow the advice I was given on how to treat it:

*No lights during treatment!
*Every day you need to do a 25% water change and re-treat the whole tank with the tetracycline
*Treat for seven days even if it has gone, if there is improvement but it has not totally gone, you can continue for a few more days
*Remember like with all medication if you don't see improvement after a few days, stop using it.

I imagine you can keep up with the medicated food but I personally wouldn't be using the fungus guard while using tetracycline. Sunshine was also acting like this before I got the medication right, all night she would just sit on the bottom of her tank (she normally sleeps in the middle of her tank) and she often had clamped fins. But now look at her (even though you can't see her  Wink ) she is doing great even though it took me awhile to get the medication right. It was alot of work but totally worth it. She still has some traces of fin rot which I believe may never heal, but is not getting any worse.

Add beneficial bacteria also while treating it, I am still adding every day since I finished treatment though today is the last day, as tetracycline while kill off your good bacteria. With adding the beneficial bacteria, I have seen no traces of ammonia or nitrites though I am still waiting for the nitrates to show up.

When changing medications it is also a good idea to add carbon to the filter and wait 24 hours, I did not do that between changing from the tri-sulpha tablets and tetracycline so I don't think it is necessary especially when your fish is this sick, you want to get the medication right. Please just act on the key points of treating with tetracycline Smiley Let us know how Mr. Tailer is doing, it took about a day and a half for me to see improvement but after that is was pretty rapid so you'll know if it is working or not.

There are different forms of tetracycline and the Maracyn II should be used according to package directions.
The course of treatment I believe is different than the one you had, Andrea.  But definately the lights should be off on the aquarium.
ALSO NO OTHER FOOD EXCEPT THE ANTIBIOTIC FOOD SHOULD BE GIVEN DURING THE COURSE OF TREATMENT!!!!!!!

Just tucked him in leaving only the moonlight blue LED light on. Don't know if I'll be sleeping tonight but he has all the medicine mentioned and it will be in fates hands now.

I don't know if LED lights count as I am no expert on lights  Wink But no lights during treatment! There is a chance LED lights won't affect tetracycline but I wouldn't turn it on. Minde might be able to clear this up.

Thank you for all your well wishes ♥ Tailer survived the night although he was just doing a headstand in the corner of his tank Sad He was seizing from time to time so I did a 50% water change added salt and pimafix and gave him a few of his regular pellets which he took. I called the gal I spoke with at petsmart last night (she's cared for goldies for 22 yrs.) and she advised this after I told her what I had added to the tank last night. All the fins that were closed are now relaxed and he's even raising his dorsal/mohawk fin! However there is white patches all over his cheeks and under his eyes. He is swimming around and breathing more normally in the last hour. The tail appears destroyed from the inside out. The anal fins are completely blood shot.

*note I removed the zeolite ammonia remover pouch I put in the external filter BEFORE adding the salt.
