Tank Water murky colour please help!!!

Hi All
Can anyone please help as my tank keeps going this murky green colour, this is happening a day after a water change and i cant seem to get it to disappear. I have tested all parameters and all are ok, i also use water treatment in my water when changing to remove any clorine or hard metals from my tap water, i live in the west coast of scotland and i am lucky enough to have great soft tap water so i dont think it is that!! My readings are:
0 ppm for ammonia and nitrite
nitrates=10
I also do weekly 25% water changes and this is the first time i have came across this problem. I dont think it is a bacterial bloom as the tank is well established with 4 fancy goldfish.
All replies most welcome,
Thanx

where is your tank situated? Is it near a window?
The green murky water sounds like an algae bloom?

Its situated in my lounge against the main wall, sunlight does come through the main window but it was fine in the summer, and has been fine previously. As we are now in the grip of winter sunshine is not an issue, i minimise the alge growth every week when i do my water changes.

For how long do you keep the light on during the day?
10-12 hours should be just fine, but longer sometimes may cause algae blooms.
How big is your tank, and how many fish?

the lights are not on at all during the day as my wife and i are working, i put them on when i come in about 5pm and go off again around midnight, so it is not long at all. It is 120 lts, thats round about 32 u.s gallons if my metric conversion is correct.

Unfortunately no it isn't, I wouldn't call it way to small especially as your readings are so good. It should be 40 litres per goldfish, no joke! Goldfish are messy who create alot of waste but also need alot of oxygen so they are in whole different class to tropicals. Also you have the algae eater which is taking up space and creating waste.
I think it would be great if you could look into getting a bigger tank, you could leave 3 of your goldies in the 120l tank and maybe get a 80l and have another goldie with the remaining one
I know it's hard and that involves money but it is really worth it and your fish will live much happier and healthier lives. You can some pretty cheap used ones off the net too or from second hand shops
However, I don't know if that is actually causing this green murk
I really don't know what is sorry. Hopefully someone can help you.

Thanks for your advise, but i am really getting alot of people telling me different things, when i first enquired about my tank and the size i wanted the guy in the store ( an experienced fish keeper) told me that 6 fish would be the max in a 120lt tank!!! when i set up my tank 2 years ago i had 2 fish then a few months later got 2 more and to this day theses fish are going strong!

what kind of filtration do you have on the tank.
Your problem may lie in the fact that you do not have enough filtration in the tank to accomodate 5 fish.
I'm sure you even know that in the last 2 years those fish have grown considerably.
Bigger fish mean more waste.
Your filter may be struggling to handle the extra load.

Hmm so what makes him more right than us? He may be an expert on fish but not necessarily goldfish. I was just treating a fish for a disease and the the guy at the fish store who is also an expert didn't tell me a VITAL thing about the medication I was about to use. People in fish stores aren't generally that great, they are about selling and more often know more about tropicals and less about goldies.
Go to any forum on the net where people are dedicated to goldfish and they will tell you exactly the same thing, 40 litres per goldfish!! Now of course your fish isn't going to drop dead because you are a bit short in your tank, but the problem could be caused by this. I had a goldfish in a 22L tank and no matter what I did, the nitrates just kept building and building till it really started to get to the fish.
Seriously we know what we are talking about
It can get confusing but I promise 40l's per goldfish is right.

Goldfish will grow really big in time, you know
That is why they need 40 liters per fish already from the start! If you haven't noticed, it's recommended in books about goldfish keeping, written by not only veterans in goldfish keeping, but also veter
inari
ans
*crap, I made a bad joke..*
So the problem here, may be that your fish are growing a bit big for your tank, and they're starting to create more waste
You may want to upgrade really. 120l should be enough for 3 goldfish and nothing more, you have one goldfish and an algae eater too many
However, since you're testing the water and probably changing some whenever needed, you would probably be able to keep them like this for a while! The problem is though that they don't have the space needed to grow big and gorgeous

Hi Aquaone and welcome to the forum.
Basically it is correct that one should provide 10 gal ( about 40l ) per goldfish. They really are "messy" fish, eat and poo a lot and grow fast. Everybody who replied to you is right.
At the same time I say the tank isn't FAR to small, but it is pushing a bit. Like mine, we've got 5 Comets in 150l tank ( 3ft ) it is pushing too,
. But at the same time if you provide really good filtration and aeration one can manage. I am aware that I will need to upgrade eventually. It is very, very important to keep the water quality pristine, 0 ammonia and nitrites and nitrates 20ppm or less. If they go over 40ppm please do a 50% waterchange, using conditioner and beneficial bacteria. Apart from this, waterchanges should be done on a weekly basis anyway
Most of us on here have had the experience of being wrongly advised by " experienced " fish keepers. You'll learn by your own experience too.
But at this stage we must handle the given situation: Please give us the proper information about your equipment too ( kind of filter, flow rate, feeding habits, some pics.
