Hi all, My kids have won three golfish @ a local fairground and wanted to know what they are.

I have done reserch on the fish but cannot find a def answer. Please Help!!!!

They were gold up until 2 days ago but now they are turning black, Why?

Hi Nossie, thanks for that, I change the water every three days and we wash every thing through with clean water Stones, Filter etc.

I don't know the size of the tank that we have but we put in 8 Ltr of water together with (tap safe) 1 cap full to 2Ltr.

No we dont have a test kit as we don't know where to find one as we have looked in our local pet store

thetoonforeva: You mean that you wash the filter under tap water every three days?! You're killing the beneficial bacteria that would protect your fish against the ammonia. You should always clean it in a bucket of tank water, it's the chlorine in the tap water that harms the bacteria.

Are you saying that you change about 8 liter of water in the tank at a time or what? If you're saying that the tank is a total of roughly 10 liters, it's not even enough for half a goldfish. If you want to keep these three healthy and happy (they will grow up to 12 inches!!) you need a tank that gives 40L per goldfish, minimum. I'd go for a 150L tank. Please go have a look for a cheap, nice tank for these babies asap!

You could always order a test kit online, most people on the forum use API test kits.

As I look closer on the photos, your fish have obvious ammonia burns, the tails are blackened and slightly torn :/ They're clamping the fins as well, a sign that they're definitely not in good shape.

While you're at it, buy a book or two about fish-keeping They're wonderful as references when setting up a tank, what kind of filter you need, how the nitrogen cycle works etc. In case your fish would start showing symptoms of illness, the most common diseases are also pictured with suggestions for treatments.

Note that if you want goldfish, CALCULATE how many fish you can keep in your tank, 40-50L per goldfish, nothing less!! The filter needs to pump 10 times the amount of water in the tank, anything smaller won't keep up with the waste of the goldfish. (Example: You buy a 200 liter tank, the filter needs to pump 2000L/h, the more the better.)

The new one probably carried a disease with him and contaminated the tank.
