Something very odd is going on...

So a few days ago I noticed my tank had a little bit of algae on the bottom and on my decor. But I did'nt think much of it. Yesturday I noticed my 3 goldies were acting odd. They were darting around the tank a little bit, then staying very still and hiding. So I figured this was them telling me there was something going on in the water. So even though I cleaned it not but 5 days ago, I decided to do an early cleaning. Cleaned the gravel, did a 60-70 water change, de-algaed the tank with an old tooth brush and used stress coat.
Well there's be no improvement in their behaviore and I'm starting to worry. All 3 float around near the bottom or in the corner and if they do swim around it's very slow and almost jerky sometimes. They seem to act fine but only when I try to interact with them, but then they just go right back to floating. Then sometimes they'll randomly dart around the tank and hide like they're suddenly startled. They clamp their fins a little and Larry my big common is missing more scales.
Here's some more info...
10 gallon tank (Yes I know it's small. I'm still trying to work on that.)
3 goldfish, one common and 2 comets. Average size, 2 inches with the biggest being about 3.
Stress coat +
Aqua Clear power filter 100 GPH
Set up for 4-5 months.
I don't know what suddenly went wrong. I hope it's not something I did....

By the looks of it you didn't test the water. They seem to be unhappy with something there, I doubt it would be parasites or infection of any kind
yet
. If I were you, I would've broken out the water test kit (I don't remember if you had one or not?) to make sure I knew what's wrong with it. It would be close to useless to test it now after changing the water.
If it won't get better after a few days, you should probably change out a little bit more water still, might be a nitrogen spike

With that size of tank I'd be doing a water change 2 to 3 times a week....your fish are poisoning themselves, as they grow they are producing more and more ammonia, and your tank can't dilute the concentration....do more frequent water changes and add an anti-spike buffer such as Tetra Easybalance.....and get a bigger tank asap

O.k. I'll start doing more water changes and see about getting a water test kit and some anti-spike. I'm hoping to hear from some one concerning an interview on Tuesday and if I get the job I can get them a bigger tank. They seem to be doing a little better. Swimming around a bit more actively. I've never had this problem til now, but maybe it's a sign that things are getting out of hand in the tank.

Good luck with the job! I agree with scrivens, they need a bigger tank, as you know. The water quality is not stable in such a small tank. A small quality issue quickly becomes dangerous. Definetly change the water more often. When you look for the water test kit try to find API master kit. Don't pay too much for it though, I have seen it in petstores as high as $50! You can buy online for $20.

It probably is, my goldies started hovering around as well when I kept them in the 8 gallon. So I borrowed a 10 from a cousin and put two of them in there. It helped at least until I got this one and moved
In the end I was changing water every second day in the 10 gallon @_@
I think just a pack of test strips would be okay. If you'll keep up the two water changes a week your fish should be alright, and in case they're acting up, you can test the water with those

Larry, Curly and Bob are acting much better, maybe it was just a bad spike. I've been doing small water changes every other day. No word on the job yet, but I'm hoping they'll call soon. I'm not giving up on this one. It's too good of an opportunity. XD

Well I have good news and bad news. Good news is my fishy trio seem to be back to %100 or pretty darn close. Bad news....I did'nt get the job I was hoping for. :/ Had an interview, but I guess it was'nt to be. She said they could'nt fit me in with their team, but would hold onto my resume.
Here they are a few minutes ago.

Aw sorry to hear about the job GoldFishNoob *Hugs*
Glad the fish are feeling better
Perhaps there are alternatives for the fishes home, rather than having to buy an expensive tank?
I'm not sure how plausible it is, but I do sometimes sit and wonder if items such as bath tubs would make suitable fish tanks
I believe Dragonii mentioned something along these lines a while ago, but always something you could keep in mind hun.
