The Goldfish Quiz
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:02:04 PM »

Are you ready to own a goldfish? Take this quiz to find the answer.

1. How much money are you willing to spend on your new pet?
a) As much as it takes!
b) A sizeable ammount...but not too much
c) No more than $10
d) I have to spend money?

2. How much time are you willing to devote?
a) My entire life will be given to them!
b) Whatever the ammount of time they require
c) Not any more than an hour a week
d) I have a busy schedual...

3. How much room are you going to provide?
a) 10 gallons per goldfish - I looked this up ahead of time.
b) My fish will live in a 5 gallon tank
c) 2 gallons should be good
d) What about a goldfish bowl?

4. What will your water change schedual be?
a) One 50% water change once a week, including a gravel vacuum and scrubbing off algae
b) One 30% water change once every week
c) Dump everything out of the tank, rinse it out, and put it back in once every 2 weeks
d) Whenever I realize the water is too brown to see my fish

5. If you encounter any illnesses with your fish, what will you do?
a) Seek help immediately from a reliable source such as my goldfish book or an online website if I don't know what it is. If I still don't know, I will try to take it to a local vet.
b) Watch how it goes. If it gets worse I'll buy some medicine.
c) Ask my aunt. She keeps a few angel fish at her home.
d) Ignore it. It will probably leave on its own anyhow.

6. What will your feeding rutine consist of?
a) I will feed my fish twice every day as much as they can consume completely within 2-3 minutes. I will feed them a good stable fish food, such as flakes or pellets, and occasionally dethawed frozen peas to prevent swim bladder disorders. I will also suplement it with live foods to keep them happy and healthy.
b) I will feed my fish once a day for 3 minutes. I will feed them all flakes and maybe some peas now and again.
c) I will feed them until they won't eat any more once every other day.
d) I will drop some food in when I remember, which may be once every week or so

7. How much work are you willing to devote for your pet?
a) I will work for them until my back breaks!
b) I will work for them whenever they need it.
c) I don't really want to do that much work, but I will if I have to. Time is money!
d) Work? I don't want to do work! Goldfish are supposed to be low-maintenance!

8. What kind of substrate will you use?
a) A nice, pea-sized gravel or sand
b) Some fine, colorful gravel. It won't get stuck in their mouths...will it?
c) Some rocks I find in my back yard - cheap and affordable
d) Who needs a substrate? I will put one or two marbles in my goldfish bowl

9. Will you decorate the tank?
a) I will give my goldfish several live plants to provide oxygen and hiding places for my friends. Also, I will decorate it attractively with storebought driftwood and maybe some large decorations that will not allow my fish to get stuck in them.
b) I will put a few plastic plants in the tank so they won't feel frightened. I will also buy a few cute decorations I saw at the store, that are fish-safe and have no sharp edges.
c) I will plant some weeds in there in my grandparents' garden. That will save money.
d) They don't need to have decorations.

10. How do you plan to go about monitering water conditions?
a) I will buy my own test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine, chlorimines, gh, kh, and ph. I plan to keep my ammonia level at 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, nitrate from .5 - 20 ppm, chlorine 0, chlorimines 0, and a ph not to acidic or alkiline. I will test the water every time my fish's behavior seems off or when I do a water change.
b) I will get it tested at the local fish store once every week.
c) I will test the water at my fish store about once a month
d) Test the water? It would fail!

11. What equipment will you use for your pet?
a) I will get my fish a filter (carbon, sponge, or other) double the size of the tank (a 20 gallon filter for a 10 gallon tank, and so on) airline tubing, an airstone to provide more efficient oxygen exchange, and an extra pump or two in case one goes out. I will also supply a heater in case of a power failure.
b) I will get my fish a nice sized filter, airline tubing, airstone and pump.
c) I will get a small and cheap filter for my fish
d) I can't get a filter to fit in my goldfish's bowl. Besides, they don't have to have one, right?

If you answered mostly a's: Congradulations! You are well prepared for owning a goldfish. A good fish owner always does the research ahead of time. Thanks to your willingness to work and your love for the breed, your pets will have a good life.
If you answered mostly b's: You are almost ready to own a fish! You have the basics down, but lack a few important bits of information for the well being to your fish. Review stocking capacity - goldfish must have 10 gallons per fish in the long run in order to live a comfortable lifestyle.
If you answered mostly c's: It sounds like the goldfish breed isn't meant for you. A fish such as the Siamese fighter or the guppy would better suit your finantial and personal needs. Remember that goldfish are a long commitment - some have lived well over 50 years old! If you would like to keep a goldfish, consider attempting to keep one of these fish first. Also, anything you place in your goldfish tank must be fish friendly. Rocks found out of doors may contain harmful toxins (weed-killer, grass fertilizer) or alter the ph of your tank. Other plants that are not specifically intended for goldfish may kill your fish if they eat it.
If you answered mostly d's: DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH, or any other fish for that matter until you have done more research. Goldfish need owners that will give them time, love, care, and attention. The ignorant fish keeper is often times the most fatal for their pet. Contrary to popular belief, goldfish cannot live in a bowl. They need a spacious area with good equipment and a good owner!

Thank you for taking the goldfish quiz!

Lol thank you, and yes I did create it myself. I just thought, why not make there a way to let someone know if they're prepared for owning one of these fantastic creatures? Who knows...someone somewhere may change their mind on whether or not they should get one. I hate seeing (ande hearing) stories of people who get goldfish that die within a week, then wonder what happened and why. Most of the time it's because they're not equiped with the knowledge they need. This quiz maybe would help one decide if they are or are not.

Great Smiley

Either way, the n00bs should easily find the most reasonable answers here Wink So it's not only a quiz, but it deals with the most important parts of keeping goldies Smiley

Thank you both very much! Cheesy

Every body on this website is awesome. So much I have learned just from reading other's posts! This quiz is simply a compilation of the valuable info I've accumulated over the past year or so, assembled in the form of a quiz.

I was OK with quiz except for number question #1. I kind of read it as: "Oh god, do I have to spend more money?" Even the amount of time I spend is crazy, but I figure time is lessons learned. Money is my problem. I don't think I've ever spent this much on a pet before, and so I am or was a little surprised. Don't get me wrong, the price of the tank and fish was a bargain, but like now I have enough Goldfish Flakes in the economy size to feed my fish for the next couple of years. That was before I found out that maybe quality goldfish flakes is still goldfish flakes.  Hey, I'm not complaining I just got my two goldfish to eat boiled peeled peas for the first time.  Smiley

I also have to admit I am not sure about chlorimines, except Seachem's Prime is supposed to deal them a mighty blow. Go Prime!  Grin

Lol you guys are ridiculous Tongue

Prime and Amquel +...couldn't live without them.

Our water is so bad, my fishies can't live in it even with a dechlorinator like aquasafe (which is aquaUNSAFE because our water has so much ammonia). Added a bit less Amquel than usual this past water change - caused a major ammonia spike - and my fishies were flashing and scratching on everything, had huge bloody streaks in the tail, and fins were being shredded. So I raced to my "fish cabinet" and grabbed the stuff, treated with some more, then lo and behold, all better by the next morning.

Those guys must make a fortune out here...that is, if anyone knows what the product does. I certainly know I couldn't live without it.

I feel so lucky!  We have a natural spring well, about 300 feet down in the ground. Smiley
Sometimes I feel I am wasting my $$$ buying water condtioner. Cheesy
The Seachem products I'm sure are very good but here we can only get them in tiny bottles and they are so darn expensive!!
To have products shipped isn't worth it either since we would have to pay so much in shipping!
Sometimes the shipping is more expensive than the item!! Angry

Ooooh lucky duck! I wish we had that...our water people are so dang st*pid, they dump so many chemicals in until it smells like a public swimming pool  Angry
Holy cow, that's absolutely ridiculous! Out here a medium sized bottle of Amquel is about, hmm, $7. Pricey, yes, but hey it's worth it. Geez, can't you go to a specialty store or something? That's pathetic!  Undecided

Frankly I really don't want to bother cuz I don't think I need them! Smiley
There are very good products that are less expensive that I've used with great success for years.
I have almost 12 year old goldfish.
Nothing hardly ever gets sick or dies around here!LOL!
Only problem I've had is buying sick plecos lately and one oranda.
Already sick when I bought them but my fish are all healthy and happy.
Why switch to something else when they've been so healthy and hearty for years? Smiley

Where I come from (not where I live now) we have completely wonderful water Smiley No need to add anything to it as there are no chemicals at all added Smiley So mom doesn't use any water conditioner at all, since that'd be a waste of money Wink
However, my tap water smells of chlorine when filling the buckets, so I use aquatan by Sera Smiley (real cheap and real good!!)

Glad to hear of your sucess with good, clean, pure water Minde and Nossie. I should relocate my goldfish to where you live! Then we should have a public goldfish meeting pond where all our goldies can swim and have playdates together!  Cheesy I can see them squealing and wriggling in excitement over the prospect of meeting new friends  Grin

Honestly, it really HAS been a battle against water conditions for me. I cannot count the ammount of fish I've lost due to poisonous water! It really saddens me, especially because I didn't know what was wrong. My baby black moor Coal (he was about the size of my thumb nail - tail included) died the same night I purchased him due to toxins in our terrible water. So frankly, purchasing fancy shmancy water conditioning products is a nessesity for me. Unfortunately, the cost is somewhat of an irritating factor, but hey do whatcha gotta do.  Roll Eyes

To think we bathe in, drink, and live off this water...if goldfish die in it, imagine ingesting it...I sure would give anything (well, almost anything) to have a better source like you ladies.  Sad

Aww playdates Grin I can see it Goldiegirl! All their little tails shaking in delight and high 'finning' each other.

Yeah the water can be rank at times. Used to live in BC and the water flowed right off the side of the mountain fresh and clean. The hot springs were amazing too we used to go once a week for a good long soak - devine!

High "finning"!!! Love that term. High "fin" you April for coining it!  Grin

Funny thing, we have glacier water and it comes out perfecly lovely, all clear and no chems. Then the water co. dumps a ton of crud in it to kill the germs. It takes me 4 hours to get to the nearest hot spring but its well worth it!!!

I guess they have to cover their behinds in case anyone got sick from drinking it, it's so ridiculous to think they mess with such a good thing  Undecided Ahhh a nice long soak in the springs would be heavenly. Enjoy!

I bet goldies would love to live in a spring with tons of little rocks and room to swim. No illness or disease...that's probably what the great sky-pond looks like XD I can see it now....shimmering waters reflecting the sky, goldfish swimming and leaping to their heart's content  Shocked That's where I'd wanna live Cheesy
