I can imagine. Cleaning the tank used to gross me out, but I've become immune to the abhorrence of fish poo now, having done it so many times. But drinking it??? Ugh. Now it's on a whole 'nother level.

When I was young I made an automatic water changer. Drink the fish water with a straw, spit it in the sink and put dechlorinated water back in. My mouth tasted bad for weeks! Cheesy

Yup, aquarium water contains a lot of chemicals that are good for fish, but the human digestive system has no idea how to deal with them!

Also most of the products I use says in big writing "NOT TO BE USED ON FISH INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION".

O.O yeeeacky! I don't wanna think about putting fishy water in my mouth, whether I actually consume it or not.

Do you think it's bad if pets consume fish water? Because I have a very tough time keeping my kitties out of the fish tanks, mostly my betta bowls.

Hi goldiegirl.
My cat drinks betta water all the time! Cheesy
He weighs like 20lbs!
I think it must be some kind of tonic! Wink

Hee hee mine does too. He's a main coon and weighs roughly 25lbs...I agree with your thesis about a tonic! Fish water = nutrients = some kind of steroid = giant kitties!  Cheesy

Still...I don't like it when he does that, it gets cat hair in the water  Shocked

One of my teachers had a huge tank with lots of weird cichlids and catfish, her cats were drinking from the tank, and as far as I know, they're just fine Smiley (Until one of the huge cichlids bit her tongue, she stopped then) Animal metabolism is a bit different, considering that they can drink sea water without getting nauseous for instance!

Yeah, like toilets!  Lips sealed Nasty habit I'm trying to get mine to stop.   Grin

I was at Walmart the other day, and an older man was there purchasing 3 beautiful goldies. I couldn't suppress my curiosity, and went up to him asking how big his tank was and why he was buying the goldfish. He said his tank was 55 gallons and cycled, but every time he bought some goldfish the next morning they were found dead against the filter. He had lost NINE FISH!  Shocked Closer interrogation revealed he had  no idea what water testing was or how to do it. He said he was using a water conditioner, but it wasn't one that removed the ammonia and nitrites found in the water out here. I took over 45 minutes explaining to him about testing water and treating it properly, as well as proper feeding habits and the importance of water parameters.

When he walked away, I felt a small satisfaction in knowing those three fish might stand a better chance at life, but then was crushed under the realization that I couldn't spend all day at the tanks of Walmart preaching to everyone who buys a goldie  Undecided

Isn't that the truth Minde! But perhaps that's why I decided to adopt one feeder fish (Wisp) in a tank of hundreds. Just in knowing I was able to make one's life a bit better, even though many were doomed  Roll Eyes

Good on you Goldiegirl Cheesy That is wonderful and you have said some fishies lives Smiley I don't see how people can continue to buy fish after they have lost nine. I wish I had of had someone like you explain all that to me when I first started getting goldies.

Goldiegirl: Hope you'll meet him again sometime so you could ask how those fish are doing Wink

Hanna: 11?! Now that's just... D: Did you ask how big tank he/she had too?

Actually, I've tried to explain about water testing to mom sometime, but she didn't really care Tongue She likes her fish very much and performs maintenance like you should, but water testing is just... not necessary it seems. Then again, once you know your tank it doesn't have to be done that often. But you still never know without testing!!

Nossie, I didn't ask, because he seemed to be in such a hurry just to get away.... Huh I just felt so sick after this, seeing those poor fishies all in one bag and how they were handled, etc...

Naw poor fish. At the pet shop the other day their was this old couple that wanted to buy a goldfish and they asked if there was any specials and the lady said you can get 10 fantails for $25 or 10 commons for $20...or something like that. I left so I don't know if they bought them. I don't know why they have 'deals' like that for so many fish as hardly anyone would have the room to keep them properly.

How infuriating! People these days only care about money!  Cry They don't even care that those 11 fish and 10 fantails and comets have lives too (even though they are little ones)! Then they get home, kill 'em all off, go back for more again and again and don't think twice!  Angry  Cry sorry but I'm super steamed right now...I think we humans should be more responsible for our little friends...I just wanna adopt every fish on the planet now.  Cheesy

Abbie: That's DISGUSTING! Angry What are they thinking coming up with sh*t like that?!
I'd like to go and beat some sense into them so they'll remember why it's unreasonable and cruel with those "DEALS" of theirs.

Yeah, that's how I got my tropical fish at the grocery store....Buy 10 for $10 get the 11th for free!  Roll Eyes
So I picked 1 gourami and 10 zebra danios! But even they didn't dump them all in one bag and I already had the tank all set up and cycled.  But for a beginner hobbiest and for their first fish...that's bad.... Undecided

Minde: Exactly, not to mention that those were goldfish, so not many people have a 100 gallon tank/pond to keep them in since most people think that "they're so smaaall".
