time to say good bye to my buddies :(
« on: August 01, 2010, 04:38:27 PM »

As you all know I adopted two little goldfish but just cant handle the care of them ( I do not want to stunt them) So I have made an extremely hard choice and decided to take them back to the store Sad They will be sold as feeders... But as several people have pointed out.... being eaten is a fast death.

I do not want to do this Sad its a very hard choice and I feel so bad.

Am i making the right choice? Or should I keep them and hope for the best?

I want whats best for them

The option is either this or keep them in the ten gallon until I get my fourty gallon running and keep a betta in a one gallon tank then upgrade him to the ten gallon when i move the goldfish.

I can assure you I take VERY good care of my pets.

Keep them!!! I'm sorry but that is what I would do. You have two fish in a ten gallon? It's not ideal but it's not a death sentence either which is what being a feeder would be. I don't understand why they would be sold as feeders though, people want to buy goldfish you should see how many them have near me and they never sell goldfish as feeders!
I have about a medium size comet in a 6 gallon tank and to make it worse it is a hexagonal shaped tank but he he is still surviving and has only gotten fin rot once. Also once he cut his head open but that was in his old tank which was even smaller and he is very fast. But both were easy to treat.
If you stick with us and really keep an eye on water quality I think you can do it for sure Smiley I imagine they are only small at the moment and though goldfish grow quicklyl, it's not like they are going to be 20cm long any time soon.
Please don't do it Sad It's your decision in the end but I know that you can upgrade eventually. I'm a poor uni student as every uni student is and I only just got a job yet through extreme saving I'm going to be able to give my goldfish a much bigger tank in a matter o days Cheesy

Just to add my goldfish is still alive because I keep a eye on water quality and do a 20% water change about every 5-6 days. I also regularly have to clean some of the filter material but I also know that my Sunshine is very happy Smiley I feed him a variety of foods from goldfish pellets to brine shrimp to peas to pear to special frozen goldfish food. It keeps him nice and strong and if anything was to go wrong because he is healthy he can fight it off much better. So also do this with your fishies Smiley

KEEP THEM!!!! do not even think about taking them back to the store if you know they are going to die! as andrea said, a small tank is not always a death sentance. you need to keep a eye on the water quality and keep on top of the cleaning etc but if you do that i see no reason why they shouldnt hold on till you managed to get a bigger tank.

if you seriously cant handle them, see if someone you know would like them? maybe for a pond or if they have a tank themselves. please dont give them back to the store if you know they will be feeders.

Sad Elli, keep them, I cannot stand the thought they will be eaten. They have got the right to live. They will give you so much joy and as Andrea pointed out, stick here with us, we'll help you through every problem here.
Please, please don't get them back to a place where you know they'll face death for sure.

You can do it, you are able to look after them and they will repay your effort with love. They will wiggle and dance for you.

Please rethink your decision  Cry

Hi katie88,

we must have posted at the same time, lol
Yes, Elli already looked for sbdy who has a pond, but it wasn't successful.

Anyway, Elli, keep looking if necessary, but don't give them back.

I say, keep them as long as you can! If you feel like you already have too much to do with your goldfish, don't bother getting the betta! At least not until things are stable with your goldies!

Like I mentioned already, I keep all my fish in two very small tanks for now. But I found an apartment, so I'll be setting up my 83 gallon asap! Smiley I've had them since November and none of them have been sick so far Smiley So if you only want to, you can do it!!

And like everyone else said, we'll be here for you!

actually I love my little goldies with all my heart. I was just thinking it would be better to have one perfectly stocked tanks than two that need to be upgraded. A betta wouldnt be any extra work if i put it on the same schedule as Bubbles and Spaz. 20% water changes every other day. Bacteria added once a week food when i wake up and before bed ... Not a hard schedule. Even with medication as I just give it after they are done eating. My goldfish arent much work really. Even with college I'll have the time.

I just want them to be happy and the thought they will be eaten kills me Sad

I bought the tank for the betta but i'm waiting until my tank stablizes or I move to get the betta ( Unless they have a very good shipment lol)

I think I will keep them Smiley I'm truly doing my best. And I can do the same for a betta in a one gallon. i'll just upgrade them all ASAP Smiley Betta to the ten gallon and goldfish to a bigger tank.

Yes, Elli, this is the spirit Cheesy Grin
I'll give you a karma for this. I am sooooo hapy, you made the right decision.

I'd say a second bithday for Bubbles and Spaz: "Happy Birthday you two cute fishies, all the fishie friends here wish you a long and happy life with your mummy Elli"  Grin

It should decrease with each water change, and gradually "fade" into nitrite. Are you testing for nitrite at the same time as ammonia?
And it can take a little while for the bacteria to catch up since it's a small tank and with two fish. Just be patient Smiley

does your tap water have the same ammonia readings? Using the conditioner does not really remove it, but sort of locks it up so it is no longer dangerous to fish Wink

That's a good question Hanna. Supposedly our water here has ammonia in it and my friend was trying to cycle a tank and it just wouldn;t cycle, it took quite some time.

I'm so glad you are keeping your fish Smiley I know it will all work out and you won't regret it.

Yes the water here reads the same as the ammonia in the tank ...

I came home today and it looked very promising. Clear water healthy fish cleared up eye fins looking great and ammonia burns are completely gone Smiley

so i tested the water and got a shock

ammonia .50
nitrite .25
nitrate 5

the readings look ridiculous to me as the tank seems to be doing amazing

Well... that sounds pretty insane |:
But as long as your fish are okay, and as long as the tank is cycling well and you're using water conditioner when changing the water... I'd say you shouldn't worry Smiley

Could you get it tested at a pet shop? Maybe there is something wrong with your test kit, like it could be faulty. It's always good to get those second results.

I got it tested at a pet shop originally and all my parameters from my first test were about the same as the pet shop parameters.

And  to me its so weird that my tank looks amazing my plants are thriving and the fish are doing great but the parameters are so high. I'll do another test tonight.

HI Elli, did you check on the expiry date on your test?
Also sometimes there can be factors to give a faulty reading... unfortunately... sth in yout tap water...?

keep using your water conditioner and the detoxifier for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
