Pea-size, I know. But here's the deal; I am splitting up the fish by breed this weekend which essentially comes down to big fish in one tank and small fish in another. The big orandas do well with pea-size gravel, they can pick up mouthfuls and spit it out. The fantails on the other hand can get a piece in their mouth but can't spit it out. I've seen them "choke" on a piece for 45 minutes. I have some much smaller gravel (about half a pea-size), is it ok/better to use that?

I think a mix is nice Smiley If they already have some smaller pieces in their mouths, they can't pick up the bigger ones Wink My gravel is pretty mixed in the end with only the bigger fish taking those slightly larger pebbles in their mouths. The small ones are usually satisfied with just picking on them or grabbing some smaller rocks Smiley
The community tank at my parents' place has very round and smooth gravel with pretty small rocks, and even the 4 inch goldfish are doing great with that! Smiley
