Need advice on goldfish

I have an oranda goldfish that is about a year old that lives with two other goldfish, a common goldfish and a fantail. I got the common goldfish two years ago and then I got the other two fish just a year ago. For the past two months the common goldfish has been bullying the oranda. He doesn't bother the fantail, just the oranda. I came home the other day and the common goldfish had bit the pelvic or anal fins off of the oranda nearly down to the fleshy part of the fish. He had also nipped a good bit off of the tail fin. I have thought about removing the oranda temporarily in order to give him time to recover and then reintroducing him back in the tank; however, I'm worried this would only make the tension between these two worse. I am currently in the process of purchasing a much larger tank because I know the one I have is becoming to small as all the fish continue to grow. I have a feeling that cramped quaters is probably one factor in my common goldfish's bullying manner. My main concern is what will happen after I take the oranda out so it can recover, and then try to reintroduce it back with the others? Would it just make the quarreling worse?

You are correct in assuming that the size of the tank as the main cause of the aggression. As a general rule, a single goldfish needs around 20 gallon of water and 10 more gallons for each additional goldfish. So 3 goldfish will need at least a 40 gallon tank, the bigger the better. I would separate the oranda goldfish and treat it with some aquarium salt to help the wound heal faster and some antibiotic drops in the water to prevent the wound from becoming infected. A product that many hobbyists recommend is called 'Melafix", so you can try that. Once you have the bigger setup the aggression should decrease, since they won't be bumping into each other that often.

When I do purchase the bigger tank, I am thinking about getting an algae eater to go in the new tank with the 3 goldfish. What type of algae eater should I get? I have been looking into a bristlenose plecos, but I'm not sure? Does anyone have a suggestion? I don't have any live plants to go in my aquarium, so I need to find one that could tolerate living without live plants. (I know live plants are better and I may eventually incorporate them into the new tank, but to begin with I will only have the plastic plants and some driftwood.)

algae eaters, especially pleco will greatly add to your bio-load, and don't get chinese algae eatters, they prefer fish slime............
