Hello! got a 60 gallon tank for my goldfish, wondering about size...
« on: February 07, 2010, 03:37:34 AM »

Hi! Son's betta died, (had him in a bowl vase thing, not surprised in retrospect after learning a bit about the fishes) so we got a 10 gal. starter tank from the petstore, and still ignorant of details regarding water space needed for healthy fish, who needs a heater and who doesn't, etc., filled it with 2 fantail and 2 Shubunkin goldfish, and about 5 smaller tropical fish (labeled "community fish" at the petstore) and got all excited about our new friends, and a bit curious, so one click led to another, and so I ended up back at the fish store getting a 60 gallon tank for my goldfish, and keeping the 10 gallon after equiping it with a heater for the tropical fish. I had planned on adding 1 more goldfish to get a nice odd number, and figured I couldn't go wrong, 5 fish in a 60 gallon tank should be plenty big, but.....the night we went to pick up the 5th goldfish, it was determined by overwhelming majority vote (3 against 0) that we needed to bring home the 3 individual fishies that are swimming happily around their plant filled 60 gallon tank at present with their 4 other goldfish tankmates.....so my question, after that unnecessarily info-packed intro is this. Does it sound like I will need to get a bigger tank to accomidate the 7 goldfish happily and healthily down the line, or that I may be ok with the 60 gallon tank? The filter I have is rated for up to 70 gallons, and I got a fair amount of live plants in there, and one fairly large fake driftwood looking structure decoration with holes for them to swim through.....the fish store guy said they'd destroy most plants, but they haven't been so far. Oh yeah, almost forgot, 2 of the newer additions are fantails, 1 small, and 1 "medium" sized and the other a "small" Shubunkin...

I believe the ratio for fish to gallons is you need one gallon for every inch of fish in its adult stage. and most of the fish you described there can grow up to six inches. I could very well be wrong. If they are still small then the 60 gal would be fine, but once they start getting bigger you may want to consider a larger tank. Not anytime soon, but later.

You've got 7 fish in there? I got a little bit confused by this long intro! xD
I would like to know more about the sizes of your previous fish though before saying anything certain (: But, like previous reply said, as long as they're small, it's okay. Some day you might have to get another tank for them as they all reach adulthood one day.

And just recently I saw in this thread that it would be good to have a filter with twice the capacity as the tank, as long as it doesn't blow the fish away, if it's crowded, like yours might be.

Wait 'til they grow, I think that at most you'll notice if they start getting annoyed at eachother for the lack of space d:
