I have had a fantail goldfish in a 60litre Bio Orb tank for four years with no problems at all. A few weeks ago we added another fantail and a black moor. At first all were doing well but after a week or so the black moor started lying on the bottom of the tank a lot and developed a bit of white cotton wool looking substance on its backfin. I asked advice at my local fish store and they advised melafix for 7 days and aquarium salt. I also checked the water quality and it was fine. I started adding the melafix on a daily basis (after removing the carbon from the filter) but unfortunately the black moor died. I continuedto add the melafix but the other two fish then started displaying the same symptoms and their tails looked very straggly.
The two remaining fish were spending more and more time on the bottom of the tank, not really feeding and their tails were continuing to deteriorate.
I stopped adding the melafix and performed two partial water changes. I have added salt, as directed and inserted a new filter but they were still looking ill.
This morning I went in to check on them and the newer of the fantails has now died and the original, older one really looks ill.
What should I do?Huh

Sorry to hear about that Sad But that are clear reasons why it happened which I guess is good so you can now fix it. A 60L tank it much much much too small for 3 goldfish. Goldfish need 40L each so that is why you were going perfectly before you got the other fish. They would have caused bad water quality as the cycle wouldn't be able to keep up with the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates being created. You said the water was fine but can you give me exact results? Also were you doing water changes? With that many fish in such a small tank, you would have had to be doing water changes every second day or so.

That's exactly what it sounds like, the new fish may have also brought the diseases with them so you should always quarantine new fish for about 2-3 weeks before adding them to your tank. Look for disease and treat if you see any.

Now what you have to do is buy no more fish!!! Unless you get a bigger tank but I would try to get your fantail better first. Keep a close eye on water quality, if there is any trace of ammonia or nitrites do immediate water changes. Also do not allow the nitrates to go over 40ppm. Could you buy some primafix too? I have never used it but I've seen people recommend it. So keep up with the melafix, premafix, salt and water changes.

Use some proper medication if your fish is ill. Melafix and Pimafix won't do anything at this state. Just look whether your fish has fungus or frayed fins, and get either anti-fungal or -bacterial medication that will actually deal with the bacteria!
During treatment, you should test the water daily, and change about half anytime you notice something being below/above accepted levels. Perfect water quality is crucial for your fish to survive at this state. You also need to feed him a varied and nutritious diet while it's sick! Feed lots of live foods, frozen or freeze-dried along with some fruits and veggies Smiley Vitamin rich food is a big plus!!
Keep treating until the symptoms disappear and your fish starts acting like normal again.

You should also avoid buying any new fish for your orb now, it's perfectly stocked with one fantail living in it Smiley

You should always feed them a varied and nutritious diet Smiley It's ever so important for those egg shaped goldfish.
