Many Walmart stores no longer carry live fish for this reason. Their employees are not paid well , so they are not really motivated to take care of the fish - plus most have very little knowledge about fish in general. If you stop by at Petco chain stores, they have fish that are in as bad shape as the ones at Walmart, so you should avoid buying fish at these stores if possible.
Maybe you can let the manager in that section know about it, but i doubt anyone at Walmart is going to do anything to treat the fish. It's just not a good place to buy your pet fish.

Yea, Petsmart is a much better store (only in regard to live animals) than Petco or Walmart in that they seem to take care of their fish. Walmart is still a great place for buying pet supplies like fish food, aquarium test kits and equipment and other stuff, so it's not a lost cause.

Petsmart is better than Petco. I went to Petsmart once and saw them giving their fishies a snack of sliced zuchini (excuse the spelling). We got ours from Petco and they had anchor worm, plus I saw several with fin rot or ich. The bad part is the Petco people know better. My husband said, "If I worked there, I would set up a treatment tank or two for the sick fish and take care of them." So would I. It breaks my heart to see one on the bottom covered in ich and looking miserable in his/her last moments.

I believe the quality of the fish also depends how good they are looked after. Even a chain store can have a good manager and trained staff but this is rare.

My Athena, my female betta, is from Petco... she's wonderful though, probably because I got her out of the mini container she was in and into a 29 gallon tank

I got some of my goldfish at Walmart. I spend a lot of time looking at goldfish in the tank and pick out the healthiest looking one. Also I have three goldfish boys that I bought from Walmart.
So far.

Our Walmarts in Michigan do not sell any fish. I think they quit about a couple of years ago.
Sadly I saw the same thing, sick and miserable fish in every tank.
Walmart is the cheapest and closest place for me to get some of the aquarium supplies I use, like Melafix and Stresszyme!

WalMart keep their fish in terrible conditions. It makes me really sad coz u can guarantee in atleast one of the tanks, there will be a fish dead or on it's way.

At Walmart I saw a few rotting bettas in containers that looked like they were about to be hidden so no guest saw them.
