It seems my dear Hazel girl may be a male (good thing everyone has unisex names). I noticed Hazel and Maple behaving strangely and when I looked closely she (he) has two or three raised bumbs on the gill covers. Her black markings include the gills but these bumps are light yellow. Does that sound like a male? I will get pictures as soon as I can.
Now if Hazel is male can I conclude that the other two tankmates are female? They are all approx. the same age (I have had them all about 9mo or so) though Hazel has grown faster and is a bit larger. They are all around two inches (not including the tail).

If your goldfish has white bumps, called tubercles, on each gill, then the fish is definately a male. However, just because one fish has reached sexual maturity doesn't mean all the others have. Fish mature at different rates, much like people. Just because they are the same AGE doesn't mean they have all matured. It may take longer for others to reach this point. If your fish Hazel is demonstrating spawning behavior by pursuing your other fish, bumping into them against the walls and being aggressive, this means that the fish being pursued are most likely females.  Smiley Hope this helps.

Thats exacatly what he/she's doing! Bumping her into the walls without nipping. So I guess Hazel's a he and Maple is a girl. Holly isn't behaving or looking any different so I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your help Goldiegirl!
