Water Quality problem

I have a question.  I have been testing my water in my aquarium and the nitrite level is .50 and the nitrate level is .25 but the ammonia levels are zero.  I have been doing water changes every other day but stiill no change in the levels and the fish seem to be acting fine.  My aquarium is about a month old.  How do I lower the nitrite level, should I do water changes, because when I do the water gets cloudy for a few hours. OR should I just leave it alone unless the fish seem stressed and let it finish cycling? BTW the aquarium is 55 gallons and I have 9 fish, most are small.  The pH is around 7.8.  Thanx! Smiley

You should reduce the frequency of the water changes. The tank can take anywhere from 8 - 12 weeks to completely cycle and you seem to be doing a very good job. The most important part is the ammonia concentration at 0 reading, which is very good  and is a indication your biological filtration is starting to work well.   The nitrite and nitrate levels are acceptable , but keep an eye for occasional spikes until the tank completes its cycle. If there are spikes in ammonia or nitrite , you can reduce them by doing a partial water change.

A good quality water conditioner, such as Prime, can help detoxify up to .75ppm of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, making the levels safer for your fish while cycling.  Also, add a little aquarium salt (dissolved) to help with gill function while you are showing nitrite in the tank as nitrites attack the gills.
