Welcome Halfmoon Betta!
«
on:
November 26, 2010, 02:50:43 PM »
Today I went to PetCo and purchased a new bowl and supplies, and a male Halfmoon Betta! i got:
- 1 gallon bowl (glass)
- plastic plant w/ round leaves for him to lie on
- plastic blue gems
- new betta food (never had this before!
)
- MALE HALFMOON BETTA!
I'm so happy! I haven't decided what to name him yet, but I have some pictures.
Funny thing - he's got both pectoral fins, but he is only using one of them??? Neither seems injured, he occasionally uses his right fin, but usually the left. Any suggestions?
Also - any name ideas???

Thanks Hanna! I love bettas too!
My first 1 was a purple regular male named Amethyst or something like that (shun me, for I don't remember!), then I had Chauncey, the Athena and her gals (Ruby, Aria, and Jubilee) and now this little beauty!
Hm... Sunny's a nice name! But I just came up with one (like, 5 minutes ago!) I think I'll call him Dusk, because of the color of his scales!! he's so pretty, i just luv him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got Aqueon Betta Food. Here's the link to it:

Dusk is lovely
Yeah the betta food is like those Hikari Betta Pellets, much the same.
I also use this one: (

Barbarossa loves it. When the granule hits the water surface it first "races" around like an insect, attracting Barbarossas attention.
Sindbad spat it out, but I keep trying. He eats the Tetra Betta Flakes, which Barbarossa just hates...

I love that name too!
That betta food looks really good! I'll see if I can find it.
Looks like Barbarossa and Sinbad have personality! lol, Athena knows me very well and she knows when it's feeding time. She sits on my bookshelf now, and stares at me!
How much and when do you feed Barbarossa + Sinbad each day?

Barbarossa gets 3 times a day about 8 pellets / granules and Sindbad 3 times daily a pinch of them flakes. He really jumps at my fingers :owhen I do this, first time he scared me, hahaha
I believe it, lol, all our fishies have personalities, this is why we love them so much.
If you live in Australia you can order the food online of Grahams website.
I am not sure if he's ready for international deliveries yet, but I know he's working on it

cool!
I'm going to see what Dusk's preferred number of granules is, see if it works with the water quality and everything, then I'll set up a schedule of either 2 or 3x a day! Athena gets a couple bloodworms in the morning and evening, haven't decided with her about the granules yet.
I luv our fishes' personalities! they're so fun! Chauncey was the friendliest betta ever - he simply refused to flare at anything, and he often curled around my hand! so cute!
one interesting thing I noticed - when I fed Athena her granules as a test feeding, I swear I could hear her "crunching" on them! Same for Ruby and Aria when I gave them a few to test feed!

Yes, they crunch them. Mindemae's bettas do this too. I can't hear ours, as I've got the filtration going and because of the noise of the water bubbles it is impossible for me to hear it.

wow, I didn't know that could happen!
It's really interesting!
update - Dusk is currently sitting near the plastic gems at the bottom, staring at me occasionally. Every few minutes, he swims up to the top of the tank to get some air and then surveys his new home!

Doesn't he eat at all?
If so, try and get the same food he had at the pet shop, also try to feed bloodworms and blackworms sometimes. He should get back his appetite.
But they can be picky.
I tried the granules and pellets again with Sindbad... bad luck, he spits them out and looks at me....

I feed Aqueon betta pellets. I love them because they are smaller than most of the other pellets I've tried, like Wardley and Omega One. They get about 4-5 pellets in the am and then twice a week I give them a blood worm treat in the afternoon.
I like the betta water conditioner by Aqueon too
It puts the minerals and vitamins back in the water that bettas need.
My bettas never looked so healthy, especially in their Golden Years since using the Aqueon products.
My oldest betta, Buddy is over 3 years old now.

Wow a half moon, he's gorgeous!!! I've checked out some vids on youtube and was amazed at all the different varieties of Bettas. They are such charming characters full of personality
"he spits them out and looks at me" aww that is funny but in a concerning kind of way Hanna! Hope Sinds starts eating those pellets eventually
cheeky monkey! Wow does everyone have a Betta on here too? I feel the MTS pressing down on me...

He looks like a Bullet.
He's adorable. I went to Petsmart this morning (it seems as if I'm living there lately) and the Betas look so sad, just sitting in little blue water filled cups. Once I transfer my babies to a larger tank, I'm going to put a Beta in my 5 gallon.

Defintely!
I've tried placing a single freeze-dried bloodworm at the top of the water. It hasn't sunk yet, so I'm going to place a few more here and there, and maybe Dusk will find a couple and figure out where the food comes from??
Also, he's been acting kind of bored. You think I could get him some toys? Like a small floating ball
or maybe let him flare in a mirror? I'm thinking of getting him a small cave of some sort to hide in.

They have those floating logs I guess for bettas but any ornament that he can hide in is fine.
I have some vintage ornaments I've run across here and there and my bettas love those.

April: I don't have any betta!
I'm actually on the lookout for a very special one
I wouldn't want any common colors/shapes, I want it to be a beautiful center piece in whatever bowl/setup I'll have

Not to worry April, Sindbad eats betta flakes, lol, which Barbarossa won't touch, bwahaha... but today at the market in Brisbane I bought another type of granules, all three - Barbarossa, Sindbad, Octavius - love them.
Not everybody on here but quite a few of us have Bettas too,

yay! Glad to hear they love their new food!
Ruby, on the other hand, takes granules and spits them out, like Sindbad!
QUESTION: so I think I said that Dusk wouldn't take food - this morning he wouldn't either! I dropped the food right in front of him and he didn't even look at it. I tried both bloodworms and granules. Is he sulking?

April, he's so beautiful!!
I could easily spend a few euros on him
Actually, I found a site here were you can order fancy goldfish and all kinds of fresh water fish through your aquarium shop! No shipping costs, and it's just like a visit to the pet store
They have all kinds of gorgeous colors on them half-moon bettas!! I was seriously thinking about getting one from there later
