whoa.....I think orange fantail got the septicemia

bloody streaks on the body, a red bump behind the upper right head area, listless, sulking in the corner; referred to the fish disease guide that came with the box of Maracyn and diagnosted "internal bacterial infection", probably this septicemia, removed fish into medi-bucket and treated with Maracyn and some aquarium salt, but the guide recommends Maracyn-Two, which I don't have tonight, I'll pick up some tomorrow, but does anyone have any other suggestions? I think he got it because I think the Parasite Clear I'm treating the tank with knocks out the biological filter critters, resulting in ammonia level increase, etc.....sound plausible? The levels check ok, with the nitrites only 1 level up from safe into stress, but still.....

I think your diagnosis is correct. Healthy goldfish are normally resistant to bacterial infection unless new fish are added to an existing tank without first being quarantined. Most sick fresh water fish, including goldfish, are infected by gram negative bacteria. Maracyn contains the antibiotic erythromycin, which is used for treating gram positive bacteria. Maracyn Two contains the antibiotic minocycline, which is used against gram negative bacteria - which i believe is the case with your fish. The bloody streaks and red bump defininitely point to some sort of infection . You can also treat the fish with antibiotic food (sinking pellets soaked in antibiotic laced water ).

yes, I will have to get some of that stuff asap; looks like he's doing ok in the medi-bucket so far; swimming around off the bottom, so hopefully he'll hold out until the Maracyn 2 arrives

Just for your info, soaking pellets in a solution of some kind is usually completely useless as it will simply mix into the water, so this would be a waste of time AND money since the fish won't "absorb" this in any useful form. If you need medicated food, buy food that already has the medication mixed in it (:

That definitely sounds like septicemia! please watch out for any ulcers too.. Sonorus got that when she was infected. but the Parasite Clear says that it shouldnt wipe out your healthy bacteria.. but then again I suppose all medicines do.
Im sorry to hear your fish got such an infection.. please keep me updated, this is interesting..
As far as i know, hemmohagic septicema, or 'red pest' , just pops out of nowhere, but it could also be attributed to low water quality or something forign getting into the water (perfume, ammonia, or other harsh scents).

oh, that's good to hear that Parasite Clear claims not to wipe out the healthy bacteria, I was just guessing maybe it did, as I read on the Maracyn disease info sheet about how some parasite medications wipe out the good bacteria, it seemed like that may have been the cause, but I'd rather it was random other causes so I wouldn't have to buy a bunch of good bacteria product
I ended up getting a medicine called Melafix which decribes itself as curing those symptoms I'm seeing; although it's made from tea tree oil, so I hope it works as well as a less natural medication. I couldn't find any Marayn Two and went to 3 different shops so I got the other stuff....

I used somthing called T.C. tetracycline, which turns your water a st*pid yellow colour, but I also have other stuff (fungus clear or fungus away.. I dont think Jungle sells that any more) ANYWAY I reall yhope ur fish gets better. I hated it when Sonorus had that infection, and my dad suggested flushing her (WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
) but I didnt so shes all healthy. Chances are that your fishy will survive too!
im so jealous of ur fish keeping skills...

well thanks! I do tend to get all caught up in new things, think of nothing else for a few months and then burn out and lose interest, but I hope this doesn't happen with my new goldfish phase. So far so good; and yes, the red bloody sores are all gone, thanks to.....Melafix! Score 1 more for natural remedies, I guess. The fantail is doing great, back in with the others and holding her own quite well!
I like to stare at the fish as I wake up eating cereal at 4:45 in the morning.....nice way to come back into conciousness.....

Many experienced goldfish keepers also recommend Melafix as a first treatment option for many goldfish ailments. It's also great because it's not supposed to harm your tank's biological filtration system.

Yes, I bought Melafix today for Humphrey and they confirmed in the pet shop that this medication is brilliant.
ANd we use Tea Tree Oil for treating humans too, there is plenty of cosmetics arround containing Melaleuca
Salty, good to hear your fishy is doing better

Katarine,
the next time you at walmart check to see if they have melafix.
Our walmart carries it and it is much cheaper to buy there.
