Re-cycling help asap!!!
«

Hello,
I had a major disaster with my tank this morning and so I took all the water out and washed the gravel with fresh water. I know you aren't meant to do this but it was urgent. I did not wash the filter media or sides of tank, will this help with the cycle of the tank? And it will have to cycle again right? Where should I go from here? I put mellafix in the tank to help boost the fish as it is an antibiotic used for fin rot etc.
Please help. What should I do now? Wait a few days and get the water tested? Or do a small water change tomorrow to keep ammonia levels down?
I only have one fish in the tank and it is about four years old, the lank is 22 litres.

What was the major disaster? If you add Nutrafin Cycle (or something of equal value) It puts beneficial baacteria int he tank and should work right away. It'll take some time for the tank to cycle (22L... thats 10gal. right?) So it shouldnt be that hard to cycle. Your fish should be fine.

I think it is about 8 gallon (but that is an extremely rough conversion). The disaster was trying to use a siphon but couldn't get it work so instead all the debry went everywhere. It could have been pretty toxic so I decided to change it all instead (either way would have been bad I guess).
But instead of using those chemicals I heard you can just use old filter media instead, which is what I have done. Is that ok? Because I have never used the cycle excelerator stuff and I am a bit weary.

22 liters is about 6 gallons.
For future needs, you don't have to empty the whole tank "just" because the siphon leaks a bit... I do think that it's enough if you just try collecting it again and letting the filter do the rest for a while. You could try cleaning the filter media if you do think that it's toxic. Emptying the whole setup is rather stressful for the fish. Did you at least wait 24 hours before putting him in? This is the time that the temperature needs to stabilize.
And furthermore: Buy some water tests to be certain! Get yourself some ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH tests. These are the basic and most important ones. Usually very easy to use, and you should test the water before every weekly water change! Or when your fish looks sick or is acting strange. It's usually only about the fish being uncomfortable in the water.
Anyway, try getting one of the cycle accelerators. It will prove very useful!

I didn't empty it out because the siphon leaked onto the floor or anything, I know I made it out sound like that but that would be extremely d*mb.
And I don't think the filter media is toxic, I have heard used filter media will help excelerate a cycle and I was asking if this true? I know for a fact it won't help at all now if I replace all the filter media. I don't think you are ever meant to do that, I thought it was best to replace half at a time.
I didn't wait 24 hours for the temperature to stabilise, it was a bit of an emergency and I don't have anything else that can hold my fish. My main concern is him surviving the tank cycle now and I would like tips on going about this
But thanks, I was thinking about going and buying some water testers
Normally I just get my pet shop to do it. Still a bit weary of the cycle accelerators.

No, what I mean is, that you could've let the filter handle the debris, and then clean it in tank water. Not that the media itself was toxic or anything. But it's not like this matters anymore by now.
But then what happened? I understood it as you were gonna change the water and then the siphon leaked out debris into your tank.

Ahh ok. Well what happened is unfortunately I didn't really know about the whole siphon thing, I just thought the filter would pick all that up well most of it anyway and the rest would break down. I learnt this was wrong and I got a siphon. Then I went to use it this morning and I couldn't get it to work continously so all the waste at the bottom of the tank got disturbed and went everywhere. I was scared it was going to be extremely toxic due to the fact that it was a pretty bad build up of waste so I paniced and semi-fully cleaned out the tank.
Not anything I can do about that now though
Just hope the cycle works itself out without hurting the fish to much.

Don't worry (: The waste doesn't get any more toxic just because you can see it
Either way, I'll give you some tips about cycling!
The quickest way to get the tank cycled would be to add one of the bio filter boosters (no matter how weary you are of them) and to buy an ammonia test for now, test for ammonia daily, and change the water whenever the levels are too high. It should say on the test which levels are acceptable (: After the ammonia levels go down, you should test for nitrites (again follow the instructions about acceptable levels), which are the second most dangerous toxic to fish. Again, do water changes when they're too high. Keep an eye on the nitrate levels for a short while. And finally when these levels go down your tank should be cycled again!
But remember:
NO BIG water changes!
Only small ones like 10-20% at a time depending on how high the ammonia/nitrite levels are. Otherwise you might disturb the beneficial bacteria that are establishing.

Andrea,
You would be smart to use a booster such as Stresszyme by API. It is just beneficial bacteria you can add right to your water and filter which will speed up the cycling time. You should add it evey week whether you do a water change or not. Your tank may take about a month to cycle again...maybe less. Keep checking yur parameters and do small water changes accordingly.

Nossie: Yep, yep, yep
Thankyou very much. I'm defiently going to the fish shop tomorrow but so far my fish seems absolutely fine hopefully it stays that way.
Mindemae: Thankyou aswell. I'll have a look at the fish shop tomorrow, they probably don't have that particular one because I live in Australia and we always seem to have different stuff. But I'll ask.

I went and got the water tested today and everything was fine. I know it is only early days so I am going to keep a close on this still.

They should have API products in most big Shopping Centres with a pet store, like the Westfield-Shopping-Centres
We got our Melafix there.
And our PetStock Animal Supplies carry Tetra brand foods and you also can get all sorts of test-kits and boosters in there too. PetStock has got quite a few stores here in QLD, also in NSW and VIC, a few arround Perth and Adelaide, one in Cairns.
Hope this helps,
