Looks like a small fantail to me. Can't really judge age because if it was kept in a small container for an extended period of time its growth could have been stunted. Since you bought it 5 months ago I would say atleast 7 months.

Seems like a fantail, capable of getting 10 inches long. Will need at least a 20 gallon tank, with a filter rated for a 40 gallon tank.

If you don't know the age of a GF, then the only way to defrinitely tell is by taking one of their scales and looking at it under a microscope.  Their scales have rings on them, just like the inside of a tree.  Count the rings and you will know the exact age.

Wow.. That's a neat fact to know. Didn't realize you could tell the age of goldfish by looking at the scales.

In Japan they have a special variety called Jikin, which have red fins and whole white bodies. And they get this white color because the red scales are being plucked off the young fish so that white scales can replace them. Though, this fish is rarely sold outside of Japan, and it's very expensive and rare C:

And other than that, it might be good when checking age or if the fish has parasites (But then it's usually enough with a sample of their mucus.)

I'm bored :C

Yeah, it does. It's straining the fish a lot, so they need time to recover after each scale has been removed.

Mähähä! Oh, I have my own. Occasionally d: And I'm preparing for matriculation exams and final exams and shit! o_O (sorry for the offtopic, I just feel like talking sometimes~)

Might just be so... o_O I've seen those younger Jikins, and they're almost more beautiful with a few red scales rather than having plain white bodies! Just google it and see for yourself d:

Me neither d: But then again, they rarely sell any fancier varieties of goldfish around here! So far I've only seen two red-cap orandas in my life! And tons of black moors and fantails with all kinds of colors...

Was the fish very colorful? And like, flat, round??

You mean tropical fish, right? I've never heard of tropical goldfish d:

And yea, they have most kinds of tropical fish, cichlids, guramis, tetras... C: And all kinds of bottom feeders, but barely any goldfish :C
They once had a few small koi though! Pretty expensive ones o_O (Hope they got good homes~)

Yeah, goldfish are coldwater freshwater fish.
A fish like an angel fish is freshwater, tropical..meaning they have to have a heater in the tank to survive.
Also, before I would house any goldfish with any tropicals you will need to find out what ph is best for them and temperature and hardness of water.  Many tropicals have to have a more high temperature, acidic and softer water environment, whereas goldfish do best with harder more alkaline and cooler water.  Not to mention that goldfish will eat tropicals smaller than them, such as guppies.  Also, some tropicals can be quite aggressive and territorial, so housing them with peaceful fish like goldfish may be another problem. All in all, I am a firm believer in keeping the different goldfish varieties with their own kind, as far as dorsal finned or not and body shape, single or double tailed is concerned, and tropicals with their own kind according to living environments and temperment.

Aha! I thought about that! for the tropicals, i figured if they were different, i could install a few aquuariums. that way they were all happy. Tongue and of course, my giant Wal-Mart swimming pool for goldfish. Smiley

At home my mom actually has her goldfish together with a few mollies and platys (keeping the water on 24-26 degrees Celsius) and so far, the bigger goldfish hasn't eaten any of them, and he seems not to mind the warmer water either (:
But ye, it's true, I'd rather keep tropical fish in another aquarium than the goldfish.

You are right Nossie.  Smiley
Most platys and mollies do best in the same type of water as a goldfish lives in.
Like the goldfish, they like a more harder water and alkaline water.
Also, platys like a cooler temperature then mollies tho, mollies do best in temps of 73-82 F. or 23-28 C.
So out of the 2 Platys would probably be the most compatable with goldfish.

Oho! But the last bunch of mollies we had were there for several years, they grew pretty big and they made tons of babies (:
We gave some of them to my cousin, and they're still living today! : D

Yes, either platys or mollies could be kept with goldfish but the mollies would have to have a temp of at least 72-73 F.
