when not to change water

First my readings:

PH         8.6
Am           0
nitrite      0
nitrate     0
ammonia 0

I am using the Freshwater Master Test Kit.

OK, so my fish look OK, and I had my water ready and was warming it up when I took my 'before' readings. But then I thought 'Why even do a partial?' if it ain't broke. I have API's Proper PH 7.5, and I applied it per directions.

My last water change was on 11-28, and it was a 50% change. I guess my thing is I'm not used to this. I began to think of water changes like going to church... you did it every weekend. So is it OK to skip a water change? Also I have my water in a 55 gallon plastic garbage can. And I left it uncovered for 24 hours before starting out today. Can I cover that water and keep it for a week?

Hmmm....not so sure about keeping the water for a week but you definately do not have to do a water change with parameters perfect and nitrates zero!
I would totally skip this week but if your worried or to ease your mind you could do another test midway during the week. Smiley

Yeah, skip it! Smiley I was testing mine every week, but lately I've gotten into the rhythm that the nitrates reach about 30 in two weeks, so I change 50% every two weeks Smiley And I test it from time to time if something happens so that I don't have time to change it that particular day or... you know! Cheesy I'd say you don't have to change nothing until the nitrates appear Smiley
