I bought my fantail goldfish 2  weeks ago probably. It was pretty  mostly orange but then I noticed he began to have black markings. I thought  they were just markings he was meant to have?? The black markings are on his fins and around his mouth...It didnt look like a disease but when I read all of this, im paranoid. Does a fish have all its markings from the beginning and anything else means something is wrong with him? or can its markings be gradual? Can anyone help?  Thank you  Kiss

Any sort of black markings on goldfish that suddenly just appear out of nowhere should raise some red flags. Since you are noticing these markings, it shows you are a good pet owner and you are looking out for the well being of your fish.  One of the most likely cause could be an ammonia spike if the aquarium is relatively new and the biological filtration is not well established yet. 

One thing i would recommend is to get a water test kit from the pet store in the aquarium section that will test the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels to make sure they are in the normal range. Use this as a guide to let you know when to do a partial water change.
If the water test shows a very high level of any of the above chemical, do a large water change in the 60 percent range in order to bring down the levels immediately. Be sure to use a water conditioner to remove the chlorine you decide to do a water change.

Thank you much for your advice. I will get a water tester to check chemicals. Hmm, I wonder if there's something wrong with him. He is swimming actively, and eating well...the markings look nice, even.  Tongue  I will certainly check....I dont know what happened to me...suddenly in the last 2 weeks I went aquatic pet crazy. I have 3 female betas in one bowl, 1 male beta in another,2 african dwarf frogs in another container, and 3 Goldfish in my 5 gallon aquarium w/ water filter... I cant believe Im on a Goldfish site lol  Looks like I found a new hobby. ::)Thanks 4 ur help Smiley

fish change colors all the time. i have a little fish named Palpatine who changed from lemon yellow and black tips to all orangey-gold in a matter of months; also, a fish named Grin who lives in one of my tanks has this black horizontal stripe from his nose to under his eye that makes him smile on one side (hence the name, Grin) since purchase, the fish has expanded his evil little grin so now he has a big evil grin.
now, you did mention that you had three goldfish in a five gallon aquarium-ill tell you that a setup like that is very unhealthy-goldfish make a ton of waste, they clog filters, they make a mess in general-you're going to need a big tank, at least 15 gallons, because your fish are going to grow amazingly fast and they will kill each other by producing toxic waste products.

Aww thank you !! U made me feel so much better! That is very similar to the way my gold fish changed in color:) I will closely monitor my  tank as it does have 3 goldfish. 2 of them are much smaller tho. We shall see. I also got a tester for ammonia and have treated the water the last two nights to rid the water of ammonia. Thank you much for your help:)

Hmmm...wait, ur fish changed from black tipped to all gold-ish...perhaps it had ammonia burn in the beginning ? I have no idea, and then got better? This is all  new to me, just trying to figure it out  Grin

just testing for ammonia(NH4+) won't help your fish all too much. you will need to got a tester for Nitrite (NO2-) and Nitrate(NO3-) and pH.

HELLO!!!!!  3 goldfish in a 5 gal. tank is not nearly big enough!!!  I'm sure the black you are seeing is probably from a water chemistry problem, most likely from high ammonia.  Please add a bigger tank to your list at least a 30 gallon!

I was going to say just what everyone else said (:
But I wanted to add that it's more usual that a fish changes from black to golden, or black to some other light color if it's natural. If the fish was light from the start and got red or black spots on him/her, it's most likely because of ammonia burns. So test the ammonia levels, and try to repair the issue as soon as you can!
