Can fish suffer a loss of another fish?

Our common goldfish Lily has been hovering around the bottom of the filter since I cleaned it this morning. Our other fish who I posted about in Health section died this morning due to getting sucked up the filter. Is Lily looking for Bubbles? (I did have Bubbles next to Lilys tank when he died so she could see.) Is it Bubbles scent attracting her to the filter? Or my kids said is Lily looking to get sucked up the filter too? Or is there a problem with the filter that I'm not aware of?
I'm intending on getting a new filter which will sit outside of the tank later today. Should I take the filter out now just in case? Or would Lily suffer?

Hi BubblesGold,
so sorry to hear of your loss. As goldfish like to have company I can imagine that your Lilly is missing Bubbles.
Sure she is NOT looking to get sucked up in the filter, does your filter not have a protection cap so the fish cannot get sucked in?

Hi, yes it does have a protection cap, but it has slots at the bottom and my kids tell me some filters have a grid. We are going to a specialist fish shop today, so hopefully will get a better filter, why did we only hear of this shop now?
Lily is twice the size that Bubbles was so hopefully she won't get sucked up.
We'll probably get a another goldfish after we get a new bigger tank set-up, hopefully Lily will be ok for another couple of weeks.

It could be. Our four fish have "best friends" whom they school and sleep with. In the meantime, talk to Lily and interact with her. This may sound crazy, but if you have a picture of Bubbles, put it near the tank so she can see it. I don't know how sophistacated a fish's brain is, but it can't hurt. Ours recognize pictures of goldfish and videos of themselves, so who knows.

I agree with Nicole
I think your little fish is in need of some extra company and love, so snuggle a bit more with her when feeding for example
Other than that, I can't imagine anything being wrong with your filter, but in case you're still worried, it might be good getting the kind of filter that has some sort of bars by the intake, making a thin grid so no fish will get stuck
It's possible that your fish is grieving her friend, but just to be on the safe side, I would test the water for any abnormalities. The usual stuff: pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates

! LILY NEEDS A FRIEND OF HER OWN SPECIES !
[/glow]
I say this because today my hubby and me experienced how beautiful it was when we moved Humphrey and Hepsiba into the big tank were Skippy was waiting for them. When Humpsi and Hepsi swam out the bag Skippy came straight to them, nose to nose to nose. They seemed kissing each other. They just joined together soooo beautifully as if they were mates forever and a day.
As I had my day off today I could watch them most times: no bullying, only happy playing with each other. They are in one happy bunch almost ALL the time

Lily is gradually getting a little better, she is hanging around the filter less, we are all definitely giving her lots more attention and sometimes she loves it and other times she just hides.
I noticed today that a little part of her tail is missing, a tiny tear. It wasn't like that yesterday, so I'm worrying in case she caught it in the filter because the tank is far to small for her. I'm tempted to move her into the new tank sooner than two weeks. I guess she could have caught it on a plant?
Lily and Bubbles used to swim about together, feed together and sleep together, so she probably is missing Bubbles.
I see some people don't recommend having a fantail and a common together, but they were fine, well the first day or two Lily chased Bubbles a bit but she got used to him and Bubbles was very happy, I loved his cute wiggly swimming style. I still love Lilys gliding swimming style, she is very graceful! I've noticed her tail is a bit long for a common, so I must post a photo of her in the fish identification section, she is probably a cross, she was bought in a chain pet store where the staff don't look after the fish v well.

I don't think you need to worry about the tear, from time to time, my black moor has had some smaller rips in his caudal fin, (so perfect, almost as if someone was there with scissors o_O) but it healed and was gone within 2 days on its own
Anyway, if I was you, I'd move her to the tank after about one week, because ONE goldfish doesn't produce that much waste in a suitably big tank
Especially if it's a smaller fish
But one one important condition:
Test for ammonia and nitrite daily, and do small water changes (about 10-20% at most) whenever these levels grow dangerously high.
Fantails are rather quick when they want to ;> And there are those with a bit slimmer bodies, I've got a few like that
And I think these could do alright with a common! But you should be careful during the first days, as Lily might bully any newcomers if she feels like they're intruding. I still would recommend buying a comet or shubunkin as her friend c:

A tear in the tail could also be from a water quality problem.
Have you tested your water for ammonia, nitrites, ph and nitrate levels?

We have bought test kit, just haven't sat down to read how to do it and read results yet. Neglectful us!
OK, I will find out what goldfish the fish shop has and go from there. I didn't see any fantails, so I don't think we'll be getting one of those. Just wanted to let people know that Lily and Bubbles did love each other even though they swam at different speeds and Lily never stole Bubbles food, nor did he steal hers. Bubble was almost as round as a Bubble! - Hence his name.
I will try to move Lily this weekend, Friday would be ok, right? (Tank was set up Sat)
We will be out alot from Sat to Mon as it's a holiday here, so we'll be visiting relatives and helping to decorate a house.
I feel torn between leaving her where she is, as she has been ok so far, as much as I can tell, until Tuesday when I can make sure she is settling in ok. Or moving her on Friday and making sure she is settled in and ok by Sat morning, then leaving her in new tank hoping is she happier and less chance of injury, etc.
We'll be back each evening and leaving again each morning.
Maybe she would settle in better if we weren't peering in at her all the time for the first few days, I'm not sure?

It would be better if you could stay home for a few days after moving her... so you might want to move her already Wednesday or Thursday so you could keep an eye on her and how she's doing
The tank will be cycling after all, so you need to change water whenever the ammonia is too high!
One thing, though! Next time you change water in her current tank, you might want to add some of that water into the new setup
This will help the cycling process tremendously
