The most important aspect of pond maintenace is keeping it clean of debris and waste. When left in the pond, waste will cause rapid water degradation that will adversely affect your koi. Routinely remove leaves that enter the pond. Use a pond vacuum to remove any fine silt or dirt that collects on the bottom of the pond. A pond vacuum can be purchased at your pond dealer or at a pool dealer. They are usually driven by a garden hose and can be very effective at sucking up debris. If you have a bottom drain, this can be opened periodically to remove dirt.
