When selecting a goldfish, it is best to avoid fish that have just arrived at the pet store , because signs that a fish is sick will only become evident after it has gone through a quarantine period.
Select fish that have deep rich colors and show no visible signs of skin problems, ulcers, or boils. There should be also no visible scars or wounds on the fish. The fish should have clear eyes and no visible external parasites, such as velvet or ich. Fish that have been stunted should also be avoided.
