The wakin is thought to have been originally developed in China. It has a bluish color when young, which changes gradually to a reddish color as the fish matures.
The physical appearance of the wakin goldfish is very similar to the common goldfish, with the exception of the caudal fin, which looks more like the caudal fin of the fantail goldfish.
The wakin is a suprisingly rather agile and fast swimmer, so it can be mixed with other flat-bodied goldfish varieties, such as the comet and common goldfish. It can grow to a length of about 10 inches and has a lifespan of twenty years or more.
